History of the Land Rover

The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured and produced under licence by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, to include Australia, Southern and North Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Malaysia, to name just a few. In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers. Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The Defenders offered in the US during the 90's had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover's other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the Defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.

The Car

This vehicle certainly needs no introduction. Being one of the well admired models in the Defender range, this 1992 built D90 200 TDI has a particularly unique history. Having been first registered in England on the 12th August 1993, this particular model was built to civilian export market specification for a continental European country. It's a two owner vehicle since 1993 and the previous owner states he purchased it from a British Armed Forces personnel. This leads us to believe it may well have been purchased new through a British Armed Forces car scheme whilst manning a European post. The car has only ever been registered to England with a UK V5C title document, so represents a particularlyunique history for a left-hand drive Defender. The second owner purchased a vehicle whilst residing in Wiltshire, UK and went on to take the Defender with him whilst carrying out contract work in Spain. Whilst in Spain the owner maintained its UK registration and returned annually to the UK for routine maintenance and MOT inspections. The second owner also went on to carry out a selection of popular modifications to the Defender, to include dashboard faceplate with isolator switches, adding fire extinguisher and charging sockets, electric windows, Exmoor trim seats and centre console, Jerry can rack, security rear window guards, double sunroofs, swing style rear wheel carrier, black boost wheels and 4x4 tyres, uprated polyurethanes bushes, revised suspension and a selection of improvements to the gearbox to sharper shifts.

Paperwork

The vehicle comes complete with a UK V5C Title, every MOT inspection sheet dating back to 1996, a host of receipts for all of the aforementioned work along with periodic service bills. Total invoices on file substantiates in excess of £7,300 of work for the last 8 years.

Condition

Interior

The interior presents fantastically. The only notable wear mark is to the passenger seat bolster. It is evident that all interior door cards have been replaced within the last few years.

Exterior

The exterior of the car is in very complete condition. Overall the entire body carries original paint and therefore there are minimal signs of patina across some body welds.

Paint

Overall the entire car carries original paint with its original Defender decals. The previous owner has added black checker plating to the front fender tops and bonnet.

Glass

The glass presents well with no chips or cracks to the front windscreen or any notable damage to other windows.

Wheels

This particular model is fitted with Land Rover original black boost style alloys. Weare able to fit the Defender with original period correct freestyle wheels at the buyer's request.

Mechanical

Engine

The engine bay houses a 2.5 200TDI diesel inline 4 engine - one of the strongest units produced with plenty of mid-range torque.

Gear Box

Fitted with the LT 77 five-speed manual gearbox -a revised and improved unit that changes precisely in all gears.

Mechanical Overview

Mechanically this is an entirely sorted vehicle and will be sold with a fresh service prior to sale.
