Jeep Grand Wagoneers are synonymous with classic luxury and off-road capability. Jeep produced the “SJ” Wagoneer platform from 1962 to 1991. The “SJ” Grand Wagoneer model was only produced from 1984 to 1991. The “SJ” Wagoneer platform was Jeep’s first full-size sport utility body style and the first 4-wheel drive vehicle offered with an automatic transmission. The Grand Wagoneer was Jeep’s first “up-market” sport utility vehicle model offered with standard luxury appointments and amenities. This Jeep began its life as a luxury Grand Wagoneer, before being added to the current owner’s personal collection in 2018. It subsequently underwent a comprehensive refurbishment, restyle, and was fitted with off-road capable and performance modifications. The vehicle is located in York, Pennsylvania and is offered with a clean and clear Pennsylvania title in the current owner's business name.
The fully refurbished body presents itself well and is finished in a custom-blended Blue Turquoise paint with color-matched Rhino lined rocker panels and floors and white accented roof and pillars. The body, frame, and underside components were refinished during the refurbishment and are free of any rust, rot, or major imperfections. The frame, underbody, and underside braking, suspension, and powertrain components were refinished in matte black. The custom front bumper and brush guard were refinished in matte black Rhino lining. The restyle incorporates vintage elements, including an original 1966 - 1978 Jeep SJ chrome “razor” grill, reproduction 1979 - 1980 Jeep SJ Cherokee S decal kit and front fender badges, and original 1963 - 1972 Jeep chrome “dog dish” hubcaps. The Jeep conquers all terrains on retro reproduction 17 x 8-inch white powder coated steel wheels wrapped in 35 x 12.5-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler tires. The body mounts and door gaskets were replaced during the refurbishment. The glass and window seals are free of any cracks and are in good condition. A slight haze is noted around the perimeter of the windshield, common on older or original Jeep SJ windshields and does not impact visibility. The original chrome rear bumper, side view mirrors, trim, and roof rack are in good condition. The exterior lighting lenses were replaced and the headlights were upgraded to Truck Lite LED headlights.
The refurbished custom interior presents itself nicely and was professionally reupholstered to encompass the exterior vintage design elements. The front seats were replaced with an early “SJ” Wagoneer bench seat. The front and rear bench seats were recovered in durable denim and woven textiles. The custom tan vinyl door cards have laser etched upper sections and speaker grills, further incorporating the vintage design elements. The color coordinating tan headliner was reupholstered. The floors were refinished in color-matching Rhino lining with drain plugs, designed to be easily cleaned. The original dash and gauge cluster are in good condition and free of any cracks or major imperfections. The factory cruise control is not operational. The odometer shows 146,662 miles, which is believed to be the actual mileage and coincides with the AutoCheck report. Comfort and convenience features include power windows and door locks, refurbished and R134 converted air conditioning, heat, and a Pioneer CD player with digital media input and Skar Audio speakers.
The powertrain, suspension, braking, and steering systems have been refurbished. The original AMC 360 5.9L V8 engine was fully rebuilt and performance modified. Performance modifications include Wiseco Forged high compression pistons, .030 bored over cylinders, ARP connecting rod bolts, Chromoly push rods, roller rockers, Summit Racing 8600 cam shaft, balanced crankshaft assembly, and Holley 4-barrel carburetor. Additional upgrades include a new Powermaster alternator, starter, fuel pump, water pump, starter, radiator, belts, and hoses. The rebuilt engine mates to a refurbished and resealed TorqueFlight 727 3-speed automatic transmission. The four-wheel drive system was converted to a more capable manually engaged remanufactured New Process 208 dual range transfer case with Warn Premium locking front hubs. The front and rear Dana 44 axles were refurbished, resealed, and regeared to 4.56 gear ratios. Further improving the Jeep’s off-road capability is a cable actuated OX rear locker and BJ’s Offroad 6-inch suspension lift with Rough Country N3 shocks. Responsive steering is produced by a refurbished power steering system, including a BJ’s Offroad heavy duty steering shaft, PSC power steering pump with new high and low-pressure lines, and a Rough Country N3 steering stabilizer. Stopping power is provided by a refurbished power brake system with front discs, rear drums, and extended stainless steel brake lines.
