1989 jeep cherokee xj. 2 dr 4x4 4.0 l six with 5 speed OD transmission
1989 Jeep Cherokee
Jeep has a rebuilt engine, long block with 76350 miles on it. The clutch housing was upgraded to place the clutch slave cylinder outside the housing. The clutch assembly including a new throw out bearing, clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder and housing were installed at 233451 miles. Both u joints on the front drive shaft and the u joint at the rear differential were replaced at the same time as the clutch. The steering damper was replaced at 243900 miles. The jeep was not used for some time so the fuel pump, fuel filter, ignition coil, fuel pressure regulator and the ignition switch lock assembly were replaced at 245249 miles. The engine was replaced when I bought the jeep as it was a repo and the original engine had been filled with sand. I chose to replace it with a reman long block rather than rebuild the original. The body is solid but rough, as it was used to commute to work and to off road in the Colorado mountains. The driver door has some rust spots on it and the right front fender has damage, as can be seen in the photos. There is an area between the driver seat and the door that is starting to rust thru, it is an area about 4 in by 10 in.The interior is in good shape with no tears or major damage, but the carpet and the rear seat need a good cleaning. This vehicle comes with four extra wheels and tires, the tires on the rims are old so not safe to drive on. The tires on the jeep are fair but probably 6 or 7 years old also. this Jeep has tilt steering column, cruise control, multi speed wipers, rear window washe, defrost and wiper, radio, heater and a/c. The a/c will need recharge as I live at 10,000 feet and had no need for a/c. This Jeep starts easily and runs well, with the 5 speed OD transmission I was able to average between 20 and 22 mpg commuting to work. The best I got was on a trip to New Orleans when I got 26 mpg.The lift cylinders on the tail gate hold the gate up with no problem. I replaced the ignition lock assembly because the old one was so worn it could be turned without the key and would hang up at times and be hard to turn off or on.
This is a solid old Jeep that has been very reliable, I have made upgrades and replaced parts when i felt there was going to be a problem or as soon as I had a problem. It is NOT a show vehicle but a very good off road unit. It also comes with service manuals.
