Barn Find Metal “Woody†Look “Go Devil†Inline 4
1947 Jeep Wagoneer
1947 Jeep Wagon
Known as the world's first SUV, the 1947 Willy's Station Wagon was introduced in 1946 by Willys-Overland Motors and was one of Willy's most successful post-World War II models. It was produced around the same time that many consumers began to move to suburbs after the war period, making it more necessary to concentrate on luxury over military efficiency. These vehicles were as comfortable as they were luxurious and were created to accommodate multiple passengers. During this time, instead of one or two children, more and more families were expanding to three or four, creating the need for a luxurious and spacious family car that emphasized style.
For sale, the first all steel station wagon built in the US. Yes, those panels on the side are not wood, but indeed metal. Gone are all that creaky heavy wood, that had to constantly be maintained, but just strong steel. This particular Willys Wagon is currently in unrestored condition, shows some rusting, and does not run. Sold on a Bill of Sale only.
Exterior
Plenty of patina, surface rust, and some invasive rust on this vehicle. Panels show some damage from accidents, scrapes and scratches. Sliding windows are in the passenger compartment, along with rollup windows in front, and a rear tailgate. Bumpers are extensively damaged with dents and scratches, and badging is pitted. Glass and sliding windows are all there, and a rear gate functions well. Steelies are on all 4 corners, with dulled moon style hubcaps sporting the W logo.
Interior
Driver's seat is installed but will need total restoration. The passenger seat is in the cargo area and not installed. A metal floor with wood herring strips in oak is seen, but in fair to poor condition. Door and interior side panels are covered in quarter sawn maple and will need some refinishing. Rubber mats are upfront, and a red dash, with nice centered instrument cluster in spun patterned aluminum panel is behind the original steering wheel.
Drivetrain
A Willys "Go Devil" L Head 134 with a Carter 1-barrel carburetor and a Warner 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive is attached to the back. Currently this engine does not run or have a battery.
Undercarriage
Plenty of surface rust virtually on every surface underneath. It appears on the passenger toe kick area there has been a repair, and there is no invasive rust noted anywhere underneath.
A definite project car, but a piece of history being the first all steel station wagon, and some interesting features. Seeing one of these restored is a sight to behold, and drips with 1940's all metal woody design. Made to be comfortable for the suburban family this is more than your basic Jeep. Let's get a little mud on the tires! Please note, sold on a Bill of Sale only.
