86 Grand Wagoneer - Rebuilt Engine, Trans & Carb - New MSD Ignition & Exhaust
1986 Jeep Wagoneer
1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer 4X4 with a rebuilt 5.9 liter 360 V8and rebuilt 3-speed automatic transmission in amazing condition. Comes with the standard Selec-Trac 4wd "shift on the fly" switch to toggle between 2wd and 4wd only available on the later models. Also comes with the towing package originally offered as an option from the factory. The original luxury SUV! Clean title and clean Carfax report. No rust and no damage to the body or Garnet Metallic (burgundy) paint. This is a daily driver in rare original condition. The last year it was available in this paint color and one of the last years the Gold Inlay wheels were offered. A/C (recharged this year) and heat work great, power seats and windows all work. Honey Leather interior is mostly original and in great shape except the carpet in back storage area and on tailgate were replaced with easier to maintain and clean rubber. Headliner looks perfect. Discoloration on seat fabric and carpet is minimal. We constantly get asked how much it cost to restore the interior, people can't believe it's the original 30+ year old interior.
It is extremely reliable and is my wife's daily driver. This summer we took it on a two-week road trip covering over 2000 miles and we didn't have a single problem. Brakes were inspected before our trip and checked out great. Right now, during this period of single-digit temps, it starts right up in the morning. We really hate to let it go, but it's time to get something more gas efficient and we don't need three vehicles. We just had the oil changed January 4thand had our mechanic (he is available to chat with anyone interested) check the vehicle for any leaks/issues and he found none.
- Just over 100k miles with about 15k miles since engine rebuild.
- Replaced catalytic converter, exhaust pipe, muffler and tail pipe in August 2014
- Replaced exhaust manifolds, oil pump, oil pan, and main bearing oil seal in September 2014
- Engine rebuilt by Jasper Engines in January 2015 at 85,000 miles (transferrable warranty gooduntil January 16th, 2018). Jasper is well known for their engine and transmission rebuilds.
- Carburetor rebuilt in January 2015
- Replaced starter March 2015
- Installed MSD (Multiple Spark Discharge) ignition system (distributor, coil, 6AL ignition controller, plug wires) in October 2016.
- Transmission rebuilt and new battery installed January 2017
- Over $12,000 in receipts showing above upgrades and more.
We'll also include:
- Ravelco Security System ($500 value). Once installed, the vehicle will be almost impossible to hotwire and steal. It was rated by Hot Rod Network as one of the best security systems for classic vehicles.
- Original glovebox owner's manual from the factory
- Original radio
- Replacement rubber seals for windshield and windows as well as tool to make installation easier. We planned to replace these at some point to help decrease noise when driving on interstate.
- Complete two-volume service manuals that cover Jeep Grand Wagoneers and Trucks from 1984 to 1988
- Carfax Report, which shows it has spent most of its life in the south and away from damaging salt and snow in the north.
Flaws: Driver seat has a tear in leather, back window will roll down with key but needs to be rolled up with button on dash, original radio was replaced but we still have the original (included), rear windows roll up and down but move slow, wood grain trim is faded in some spots but the wood grain vinyl sticker still looks flawless. They sell kits online to replace the wood trim, but we were fine with it.
Classic Cars Today Online has a great guide on the year-to-year changes through the lifespan of the Wagoneer.
Check out the Bloomberg article on "Why Now's the Time to Buy a 1984-1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneerâ€. While Wagoneers are currently experiencing a spike in popularity, the new remake of the Grand Wagoneer is projected to come out 2021 and as the release gets closer, prices on classic Grand Wagoneers are sure to shoot up. Frame up restorations of Grand Wagoneers are already selling for $60k-$70k from Wagonmaster.
We constantly get compliments on our "Woodyâ€, especially from other Wagoneer owners. Our mechanic says he has noticed an increase in their popularity and has worked on a number of them in Nashville, but that ours is by far in the best condition he's seen.
