Description:
1970 Jeep Commando Jeepster
1970 Jeep Jeepster Commando, Dauntless V6 225, Turbo 400 A/T, power steering, tilt steering. The actual mileage is unknown. This Jeepster is a project started by my son and I several years ago, with the goal of having a good looking and reliable vehicle when he got his license. We made great progress and he drove the vehicle to school for several months, but eventually he became nervous about its reliability and stopped driving the vehicle. The vehicle runs and drives but sometimes it starts to sputter. I have replaced the stock distributor and put on a rebuilt stock carburetor, but it has not helped. I believe the engine needs to be rebuilt, but I do not have the time or physical ability (health issues) to do anything else with it. Below I will list what I have done as well as what I believe needs to be done.
Rebuilt carb, rebuild distributor, rebuilt starter, replaced entire wiring harness, replaced brakes, the tires and wheels are about 4 years old, but they have less than 100 miles on them, front and rear Bestop replacement seats, new seatbelts, new gauges and mounting plate, new glove box, AM/FM/CD player, Ididit tilt steering column,Grant steering wheel, front and rearSmittybilt bumpers (rear with swing away spare tire carrier-modified to match the rear lines of the vehicle), aftermarket side mirrors on both sides, replacement visors, replaced stock tail lights with aftermarket LED tail lights, cowl to tub rubber seal, weatherstripping on both doors, cat-whiskers on both windows,$1400 MAACO paint job, red Durabak bed liner throughout the interior of theJeep.
I believe the engine needs to be rebuilt. The doors should be adjusted to get the proper gaps, I wouldconvert to larger hubs or disc brakes, it leaks like most otherJeeps, the fuel tank needs to be replaced....the current tank is aftermarket but the sending unit seal will not seal. In addition, theJeep could use shocks all around. Note: there are two small paint chips on the driver side (door dings). The 4WD is not currently operational. The current exhaust path is in the way of the front drive shaft and carrier. In order to make the 4WD work, the exhaust will have to be rerouted in order to mount the driveshaft carrier and shaft. (I have the shaft and carrier)
The vehicle is registered in California through January of 2017. It is currently in a non-op status, as we have not been driving it. The vehicle is drivable, but I would advise that it be picked up with a trailer for transport. Let me also point out that while this is a good looking vehicle, it is not perfectly straight. When you see it in person, you can see some wavy areas. There is no rust and no significant body damage, but it is not perfect either.
