1966 International Harvester Other

THIS 1966 TRAVELALL IS AN ORIGINAL CALI BLACK PLATE TRUCK THAT I BOUGHT AND BROUGHT TO FLORIDA IN 2004. I AM THE 3RD OWNER. IT IS A FAIRLY RARE "CUSTOM' EDITION AND CAME FROM INTERNATIONAL WITH POWER STEERING, POWER BRAKES, AIR CONDITIONING AND AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. IT'S ALSO 2WD AND MOST OF THESE ARE 4WD. ADDITIONALLY IT HAS THE TOWING PACKAGE WITH A RECEIVER HITCH AND TRAILER BRAKE UNIT. AND POWER BACK WINDOW. WHEN I BOUGHT IT, IT HAD 92000 ORIGINAL MILES. IT CURRENTLY SHOWS 8,192 MILES, SO I'VE PUT 116,000 MILES ON IT IN 14 YEARS. IT HAS SERVED AS MY DAILY DRIVER FOR MOST OF THOSE YEARS AND I'VE ENJOYED EVERY MILE. IN 2010 I COMPLETELY DISASSEMBLED THE TRUCK AND DID A FAIRLY COMPREHENSIVE RESTORATION WITH SEVERAL MODIFICATIONS.
THE BODY - THERE WAS NO RUST ANYWHERE ON THE TRUCK EXCEPT FOR THE TAILGATE. AFTER A LENGTHY SEARCH, I FOUND A GOOD ONE. OTHER THAN THAT ALL THE PANELS ARE ORIGINAL AND IT HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. IT HAS BEEN REPAINTED IT'S ORIGINAL COLOR "TURQUOISE METALLIC"WITH A WHITE ROOF. INSIDE AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT IS HIGH GLOSS AND THE EXTERIOR IS FINISHED WITH A SATIN CLEAR. THE ROOF IS GLOSSY WHITE. THE DASH, INNER FENDERS, VALVE COVERS AND AIR CLEANER ARE CANDIED AND METAL FLAKED BLUE AND GREEN. ALL NEW SEALS AND WIND SHIELD WERE INSTALLED DURING REASSEMBLY
ALL THE CHROME WAS STRAIGHTENED AND REPAIRED AND TRIPLE PLATED. ALL THE STAINLESS AND ALUMINUM TRIM WAS STRAIGHTENED AND POLISHED.THE UNDERSIDE HAS BEEN SHOT WITH RHINO LINER. I HAD THE HOOD CUSTOM LOUVERED.
THE DRIVELINE - THE ENGINE WAS COMPLETELY REBUILT WITH NEW .030 OVER PISTONS, A CRANE CAM, HEADERS, NEW GEARS, BEARINGS ETC... AND A NEW MOTORCRAFT 2BBL CARBURETOR. IT RUNS PERFECT AND LEAKS NO FLUIDS. I INSTALLED A 700R4 OVERDRIVE TRANSMISSION AND ONE PIECE DRIVESHAFT. IT NOW CRUISES AT 75-80 MPH. THE DRIVELINE HAS APPROXIMATELY 50K MILES ON IT. OIL WAS CHANGED RELIGIOUSLY WITH BRAD PENN AND SYNTHETIC REDLINE IN THE TRANS.
THE INTERIOR - I HAVE BEEN IN THE HIGH END SPORTSCAR RESTORATION BUSINESS FOR QUITE A WHILE. MY INTERIOR GUYS ARE SECOND TO NONE. I HAD A COMPLETELY CUSTOM DIAMOND PLEAT INTERIOR DONE IN SOFT BLACK VINYL OVER HIGH DENSITY FOAM. THE BUTTONS AND PIPING ARE DONE IN A BLUE/GREEN METALLIC THAT MATCH THE TRUCK PERFECTLY. THE CARPET IS BLACK SQUARE WEAVE OVER CUSTOM MADE PVC PLASTIC BOARDS.THE INTERIOR IS 7 YEARS OLD AND STILL LOOKS BRAND NEW DUE TO GOOD MATERIALS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP. THE CARGO AREA HAS CUSTOM MADE WOOD RUNNERS AND THE HEADLINER IS DONE BY HAND OUT OD 1.25" WOOD SLATS STEAMED AND CURVED AT THE REAR.
THE SUSPENSION - THE LEAF SPRINGS WERE DE-ARCHED TO LOWER THE RIDE HEIGHT ABOUT 2.5". NEW SPRING BUSHINGS WERE MADE. NEW KINGPINS, BALL JOINTS, SHOCKS, BEARINGS, ETC... WERE INSTALLED. THE FRONT BUMP STOPS WERE REMOVED AND NEW SHOCK MOUNTS WERE MADE. IT DOES NOT BOTTOM OUT OR RIDE ROUGH. IT DRIVES LIKE NEW.
THE BRAKES - THE BRAKES WERE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE. NOTHING BOLTS ON TO AN INTERNATIONAL. AND THEY DON'T STOP. SO... I CUSTOM MACHINED CALIPER BRACKETS FRONT AND REAR AND INSTALLED BREMBO CALIPERS (SOURCED FROM A LATE 90S PORSCHE 911) OVER 12'' COLEMAN RACING ROTORS. I USED A CORVETTE BOOSTER ON A 15/16' WILWOOD MASTER CYLINDER. NOW IT'LL THROW YOU THROUGH THE WIND SHIELD IF YOU'RE NOT CAREFUL. IT STOPS.
THE STEREO - I HAD A COMPLETELY CUSTOM STEREO DONE. THERE'S A 10' SHALLOW WOOFER IN A CUSTOM COMPOSITE BOX UNDER THE PASSENGER FRONT SEAT. THERE'S AN AMP UNDER THE DRIVER'S SIDE THAT'S BLUE TOOTH. BY TURNING ON THE STOCK RADIO, THE AMP AND BLUETOOTH POWER UP AND YOU CAN PLAY YOUR DEVICE. THERE'S ALSO TWO 6" SPEAKERS WITH SEPARATE TWEETERS HIDDEN UNDER THE AC UNIT UP FRONT AND TWO MORE UNDER THE REAR SEAT. IT'S ALL HIGH QUALITY COMPONENTS AND HAS GREAT SOUND.
MISC - THERE'S MORE SUBTLE MODS TO THIS THING THAN I WILL REMEMBER TO LIST. THE FOGLIGHTS WERE MADE FOR INTERNATIONAL BY UNITY. THERE'S ALSO AN INTERNATIONAL FIR EXTINGUISHER AND TOOL BOX. THE MONZA ALUMINUM FLIP CAPS FILL EACH OF THE 2 FUEL TANKS THAT RUN LENGTHWISE ALONG THE FRAME. THERE'S ALSO ONE FOR POWER STEERING AND ENGINE OIL FILLS. THE HEADLIGHT LENSES ARE CAT EYES THAT WERE ORIGINALLY 1946 MG AND 8.25 IN DIAMETER. I HAD A GLASS CUTTER MAKE THEM FIT A MODERN H4 UNIT. THE WINDOWS ARE TINTED DARK GREEN. THE WHEELS ARE GENUINE AMERICAN RACING UNITS. 15X7 FRONT/ 15X8.5 REAR. THE STEEL WHEELS IN SOME PICS ARE WHEEL VINTIQUE 15X7 WITH STOCK CAPS. CAPS COME WITH THE TRUCK AND I MIGHT BE ABLE TO THROW IN THE STEEL WHEELS TOO.EVERYTHING ON THE TRUCK WORKS AND WORKS WELL EXCEPT THE HORN. I NEVER HOOKED ONE UP SINCE THE MECHANISM IN THE STEERING WHEEL WASN'T COMPLETE.
LUMPY (IT'S NAME) BEEN A GREAT FRIEND OVER THE YEARS. I HAVE DRIVEN THIS THING ALL OVER THE PLACE TROUBLE FREE (EXCEPT THE TIME IT BROKE AN AXLE) AND SHOULD CONTINUE TO SERVE IT'S NEW OWNER WELL. THE ONLY COMPLAINT ANYONE CAN MAKE IS THAT THERE IS AN INHERENT VIBRATION FROM ABOUT 62-67 MPH. I'VE TRIED EVERYTHING TO GET IT TO GO AWAY, AND IT DOESN'T. I'VE COME TO LEARN THAT NOBODY AT INTERNATIONAL EVER THOUGHT THAT A TRAVELALL WOULD EVER MAINTAIN A SPEED HIGHER THAN 55MPH. SO IT'S THERE. ONCE YOU CLEAR 65ISH MPH IT GOES AWAY. A FEW RUST BUBBLES HAVE FORMED ON THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR DOOR. AND ONE ON THE DRIVERS FRONT DOOR. THEY AREN'T BAD NO, BUT RUST DOESN'T SLEEP. WITH THE SALE YOU'LL GET WHATEVER PARTS ETC THAT I HAVE. I'VE BUILT A PORSCHE POWERED SPLIT WINDOW VW BUS AND WANT TO SPEND THE SUMMER TRAVELING WITH MY DOG, SO IT'S TIME FOR LUMPY TO GO WHERE HE WILL GET REGULAR EXERCISE AGAIN.
