Description:

1989 GMC Jimmy Sierra Classic

It has pretty much been my daily driver since February 2018. Farthest I've driven it in one sitting is about 120 miles on the interstate (60 miles to a jobsite and 60 miles back); it did just fine. Fires up and sounds nice every time. Fuel injected so don't have to worry about the carburetor tuning or not starting in cold weather. I've not taken the top off but have always wanted to. The vehicle has about 30k miles since the restoration/replacement of the motor and transmission. I do not want to sell the vehicle, but our family recently expanded so I am needing something with four doors.

The truck started its life as a company vehicle in '89. The original owner's son bought the truck from the original owner (the dad) in 2003 and in 2009 started a restoration process that lasted 5 years. The truck was then sold to another owner in 2016. Then in 2018, I purchased the truck. Below, I have broken down what all who did what to the vehicle plus what still needs to be done to have it "perfect". I have most of the receipts from everything listed below.

“First” Owner Restoration Process (keep in mind under this "First Owner" section when it says “new” that could be from 2009-2014 when the restoration occurred):

  • Truck stripped to bare metal
  • Rust was removed and replaced with new sheet metal
  • Body was sandblasted, sanded, epoxy primer-ed, and painted
  • An ATK 5.7L 350 ci crate motor roller cam block, 9.0 compression was installed to replace the original motor
  • A GM Goodwrench 700R4 Overdrive Transmission was installed to replace the original
  • A high pressure fuel pump was installed
  • A Holly TBI unit was installed
  • All weatherstripping throughout was replaced
  • All doors including the tailgate were sand blasted and coated inside with POR-15
  • Replaced door and tailgate internal seals
  • Underbody along with 300+ bolts were sandblasted or sanded and coated with POR-15
  • Front and rear diffs were rebuilt using Richmond 3.73 gears with a pinion depth setting tool
  • Rear diff is Eaton Tru Lock Diff
  • Tail light housings and internal fenders and beds were blasted and coated with POR-15
  • Leaf spring bushings replaced
  • New U-Bolts
  • New rotors, calipers, braided steel brake lines, shoes and springs kits
  • New wheel studs
  • New 15” wheels and BFG All-terrain tires
  • Transfer case rebuilt with new bearing, shift pads, and chain
  • Rear drive shaft disassembled, painted, and reassembled with new joints
  • New a/c compressor
  • New water pump
  • New pulleys and belt
  • New distributor
  • New TBI unit
  • New MSD digital 6AL ignition system
  • Entire inside of cab was sandblasted and coated with bed liner
  • New insulation, carpet, headliner and seat upholstery kit
  • New dash pad
  • New aluminum trim
  • New windshield
  • New windshield
  • New Headlight bezels
  • New headlights
  • New side Markers
  • New Front and Rear bumpers
  • Long Tube headers with exhaust heat wrap installed
  • True dual exhaust system with turbo mufflers
  • New power side mirrors
  • Cruise control works

“Second” Owner Upgrades/Replacements:

  • Replaced the back glass with a privacy window
  • Installed Bosch FST7906 - Tachometer 2-5/8 inch Super Tach II Black Dial Face
  • Replaced interior cab lights with LED bulbs
  • Installed a Pioneer Avh-x7800bt 7" Single-DIN In-Dash DVD Receiver with Flip-out Display, Hands-Free Bluetooth Calling and Voice Activation, Siri Eyes Free, Spotify and AppRadio One (Oriinal head unit and speaker will be provided with the vehicle)
  • Installed two Kicker KS Series 6 x 9 3-Way Car Speakers with Polymer Cones Pair Black Model: 41KSC6934 in boxes
  • Installed custom kick panel inserts with Kicker KS Series 612 2Way Coaxial Car Speakers with Polymer Cones Pair Black and two Kicker tweeters in the kick panel inserts powered by one 1,200W amp.

Upgrades/Replacements I have made:

  • Replaced existing mufflers with 18" Cherry Bomb glasspacks
  • Replaced Ignition Coil with PerTronix Flame Thrower
  • Replaced rear window regulator cable. The window works great now
  • Replaced EGR valve and EGR valve regulator
  • Replaced drag link
  • Replaced rear drums shoes and springs
  • New Battery from Sept 2020
  • New power lock switches
  • New power window switches
  • Ordered and have in box Stoptech Sport Rotors and Pads for the front brakes, need installed. (Existing brakes are fine but I wanted better as I was going to increase tire size at some point)
  • Ordered and have two new front leaf springs from General Springs. The existing springs are fine but they are three layered so a little stiffer than the two layered springs I have purchased but not installed. Three leaves are good if someone wants to put a large bumper or something like that on.

Items Still Needing Addressed:

  • Driver window rolls up and down but needs some adjustment for smoother operation
  • Passenger window will roll down but does not have enough power to roll up. (Had to take door apart to pull it back up... not sure if it is a bad motor or if there is short somewhere)
  • A few paint chips along rocker panel from rocks/road debris
  • Sun visors could be in better condition; a few tears
  • Tailgate has small cracks in the corner near the window. Common trouble spot for these because water just sits there.
