1980 GMC Jimmy 4x4
1980 GMC Jimmy Sierra Classic
This is a one owner Texas garage kept 1980 GMC Jimmy, 350 - 4 bbl, 4 wheel drive, 400 turbo transmission, with 3.08 final drive, factory posi-traction in the rear, but not in the front. My father ordered this truck new and added every option and gizmo he could think of, not to be just a luxury street vehicle, but for going hunting in Colorado and Wyoming.
This vehicle is in excellent shape. However, it is still 38 years old. What you need to know is that my father was meticulous at maintenance and repairs. The engine was given Mobile 1 synthetic exclusively and the oil changed every 3,000 miles. At - I'm guessing around 100,000 miles (maybe a little less) - my father took the truck to his mechanic to have the timing chain & gear changed because the factory timing gear and chain had 4° retard for emissions and the Cloyes eliminated that and added a little power. The mechanics were astounded at how clean the inside of the engine was. If Dad ever had a hint that it was time to service or change something, he did it rather than waiting for anything to go wrong.
The modifications from stock are that timing chain mentioned above, a set of chrome headers with the thickest header-to-head flange he could buy at the time (late 1980's?), and I think an Accell coil in the HEI distributor. At one time he had an MSD ignition installed, but that is gone now.
The tires are B.F. Goodrich All Terrain Radials, 10x15x31.5" and I am guessing they are 10+ years old.
My Dad stopped driving his Jimmy 9 years ago. For the most part, the truck has sat for 9 years in the garage without starting. With a fresh battery and gas, it cranked right up. We've bled the brakes and it is running and drivable, but I would only drive it on to a trailer or a short distance until you have verified that it is safe for your purposes.
The pictures tell the story. The maroon paint has been waxed and compounded till it was worn through on the hood. The interior shows wear but is in remarkably good shape. The top has never been removed. The rear window crank has been replaced. It still has installed a Cobra CB radio and a roof mount for the K40 antennae (included) for the CB radio. The factory roll bar and tire cover are still in place.
My brother and I are arguing about the mileage. I say it has 239,000 miles, but he says no way it has turned over twice in this good of shape. I'm fairly confident that I am correct, but so is he.
Over the years my father has overhauled and replaced the transmission and I believe also the transfer case. He was always trying to find the heaviest duty items to put on the truck for durability. I think it has Rancho shocks. I believe it also has whatever skid plates and HD coolers (trans, oil, etc.) that were an option that year. It has the optional speakers, tach, and he put on aftermarket KC Day-lighters that were so popular back then.
The A/C is not working. We have not replaced the vacuum lines. The radio, fan, windshield wipers, crank windows, and electric locks all work. The fender indicator lights are the only lights not working.
We are including the repair service and owner's manual. It has a K&N Air Filter. It does not have a lift kit. It has an auxiliary switch to go from battery one to battery two, but only has one battery. In the interest of full disclosure, the manual locking hubs will need to be cleaned and regreased, as they are not working presently, " spring feels weak" but not to worry the transfer case is working correctly, and finally, it has never been wrecked.
Obviously, this 38-year-old truck is sold AS-IS. If you are looking for a fairly mint Jimmy of this era, you will not be disappointed. Most of these had lift kits, heavy mods and were abused. This baby has had a long-term loving relationship with my dad and is now looking for a new home. Look over the photos. Bid with confidence. Please feel free to ask any questions, my Dad is no longer with us, but i will do my best to answer any questions or concerns you have and feel free to have a mechanic of your choice have a look see.
Thanks For Looking.
