This truck is truly a rare, hard to find piece of American military history. Only a few thousand of these four wheel drive, cabover engine trucks were produced for the U.S. military between 1941 and 1945. Most were utilized as cargo transport vehicles and configured with flatbeds, radio communication equipment, mobile maintenance bodies and troop carriers.
The chassis is a four wheel drive, 2 1/2 ton military spec chassis. I believe the engine is a 248 and 4 speed transmission.
This particular truck was repurposed after retiring from military service and fitted with a 1950's Hopto loader by Warner Swasey. The loader is completely independent of the truck and runs using a separate 4 cylinder, Flathead engine. The loader is controlled from the cab at the rear of the truck.
The previous owner had used this truck on his property in Montana within the last 15 years. However, the truck has been parked and not started for some time. We were able to get the flathead started on the loader to lift the loader off the ground when we bought the truck. Yes, with some ingenuity, the loader will run and the hydraulics work.
The truck is a roller. The tires hold air and the truck rolls and steers freely. All of the mechanical parts of the truck appear to be intact and could probably be made to run. We have not tried to get the truck engine running.
At some point, the drivers door was removed, presumably for ease of entry. We do not have the drivers door. The center floor section/engine cover is also missing.
I would estimate the truck at approximately 10K pounds.
This truck is without a doubt, one of the most unique pieces of construction equipment that we have ever seen. I would be surprised to ever come across another truck like this one. Definitely, a conversation piece in anyone's collection. The truck would also be a great restoration project for a military vehicle enthusiast.
