The GMC brand from General Motors Truck and Coach, Pontiac, MI., descended from two trucks, Reliant and Rapid, acquired by the new General Motors Company (later Corporation) in 1908, plus heavy models that traced their origins to Yellow Truck and Coach, acquired by GM beginning in the 1920s. During the twenties, GMC became primarily a medium and heavy-truck producer, the Corporation dictating that the light truck business be largely reserved for Chevrolet. But it would be the 1955 model year that would be the watershed for what was then known as T&C. Along with Chevrolet, GMC light trucks offered the first new body since 1947. Styled more like a car than the traditional commercial vehicle, it had Easter-egg colors, extensive bright metal decoration and wrap-around front and rear windows and for 1957, GMC light trucks featured a new grille in a carry over of the 1955-56 cab design.
