1957 Ford Thunderbird red

About 500 miles since body off restoration. Car was found in one of those storage unit auctions. Not by me. It apparently had not been registered since the 70s there is a partial inspection sticker still on windshield. There was virtually no rust I welded in (2) 10 inch square patches under the seat. That’s it. I hand stripped the exterior. I also hand stripped the undercoating. That was fun. Kind of scarce 3 speed manual transmission. Flame red paint under carriage is also painted flame red

Vehicle Details

The 312 Y block was rebuilt by R&L motors in Dover New Hampshire. New gas tank, shocks, fuel line, brake lines and connections complete new brake system, new 3 piece clutch, resurfaced flywheel, new exhaust system, new interior kit the dash pad is original.

The original town and country radio has been converted to am/fm stereo with mp3 jack. Installation of a decent stereo system in these cars is challenging. I put a dual cone speaker where the original dash speaker was and put spacers and mounted speakers on the kick panels as the rear pair. I used the original kick panels and wrapped the spacers in the old seat covers. The new unused kick panels are included if you chose to remove speakers. The stereo sounds pretty good with my iPod.

A few aftermarket systems: the original vacuum windshield wiper system sucks there’s a mechanical system kit works great 2 speeds and auto park and it actually works even sitting at idle. The brake light hydraulic system was also not such a great idea by ford there is an aftermarket kit to convert to a mechanical switch which is also installed. There is a booster electric inline fuel pump installed and rear air shocks. There is a cluster of installed probably mid 60s gauges that are really nice, oil pressure, temp, ammeter and vacuum.

Two tops, new canvas soft top and non port hole hard top. The hard top was on the car when I dragged it home it has since been in storage I’ve never put it back on heck even the new soft top has only been up when car is stored in winter. I’ve only driven it on clear days late spring summer early fall. A few small things undone original dash temp gauge doesn’t function but aftermarket one in the dash cluster does. The windshield washer system doesn’t function, I’ve used modern flexible radiator hoses, I have the correct radiator hoses to include, the heater blows air but I don’t have heater hoses installed R&L plugged the inlet and outlet to run the cam in and I just left them plugged. I have no need for the heater system. The dash clock needs to be converted to quartz I disconnect battery when in garage a clock is kind of useless.
