1966 Ford Galaxie '66 Wagon
1966 Ford Country Sedan
Up for your consideration is this 1966 Ford Country Sedan wagon in SUPER condition. Of all the “survivor” cars I have owned this on ranks at the top of the list. The level of originality and preservation is simply incredible. I bought this car in 2010 out of Portland, OR flew in and drove her home 950 miles to Burbank, CA on the Pacific Coast Highway with “thumbs up” the whole way. What a wonderful problem-free cruise, with all the windows down and the sea breeze blowing in. Since I have owned her, I have only added 3000 miles to the odometer, kept her garaged and out to car shows the whole time. Now as life changes for me, it’s time to pass her to the next lucky owner.
The car was originally sold in Rochester, MN and made its way to California shortly after being sold. The original dealer sticker is still on the tailgate (see photo) as well as I have the original license plate that came with the car in 1966. This car has always been garaged as I was told by the previous owner. Aside from the original paint, it also has all original weatherstripping, glass, trim work, and interior-all in excellent shape. Take a look at the photos, I think you’ll agree that this may be the ultimate time warp wagon in existence.
Painted in “Medium Sage Metallic,” this wagon exemplifies that classic 1960’s look. For original paint, it has held up incredibly well, still with good finish and shine. It's pretty cool to view a car with 57-year-old factory paint, there’s nothing to hide, what you see is what you get. No masking marks, no sanding scratches under the paint, no layers of Bondo below the paint. The tradeoff is that you’ll find a fair number of small dings, chips, and a few scratches from 57 years of use. Nothing too extreme, the biggest being the ding in the tailgate (shown in photo). A PDR person could easily remove this if you choose. The overall impression of the car is very strong, these little flaws just add patina to the car’s survivor status. The car is also exceedingly solid, there is no bubbling to be found, none! The bottom of the spare tire well shows a small area of corrosion, otherwise you’ll find no rust issues anywhere in this car.
Wheels are American Racing Torque Thrusts on BFG’s T/A radials still showing a lot of tread. The tires are older, so I would plan on replacing them. I am also including a set of 15’’ steel wheels and original hubcaps (see photo) that would look great with a new set of whitewall radials if you prefer.
The bumpers are all original chrome, they still shine right up and there are no dents, dings, pitting or hazing. All the stainless trim is also very well preserved. All the glass is the original factory Car-lite pieces, all still in great shape, even the windshield. I have never seen any water leaks. The factory roof rack chrome plating is still in very good condition, however the wood sticker decal on the side is deteriorating. I think this could be redone with a new decal.
The true story of this car can be told by looking at the door jambs. This is a car that has been garaged and babied from new. The interior continues the survivor theme, it’s all original and has held up beautifully. Seats, door panels, wind lace, and hardware -all in excellent condition. Perfect steering wheel with no cracks or spidering. The AM radio still works as it did when it was new. AC blows air but needs a recharge to make it cold. CB radio is very cool and still works as well. You will find that everything is working on this wagon. There are no gremlins or glitches, not always the case in vintage cars. Nice dash pad with no cracks or splits, even the speaker grill is flawless. Headliner is exceptional from front to back. Full assortment of original documents along with the original 1966 lic plate from MN and vintage CA black plates and frames.
This wagon offers a huge amount of cargo space, in addition to a locking trunk in the rear underneath. 1966 was the first year of the “magic tailgate,” which allows it to fold down or open like a door to the left. The window in the gate is powered and works smoothly. The gate bottom is rust free.
Finally, the undercarriage is solid and original. Areas where the undercoating has flaked off reveal bare steel that looks like new. The pans and frame show no areas of patching or repair, just an incredible representation of what a well-cared for, low mileage car should look like.
