1968 Ford Mustang Fastback, Shelby Tribute
1968 Ford Mustang
I've owned this 1968 Mustang fastback for the last 20 years. I decided to take on a full restoration and restomod project to turn it into a 1967 Shelby tribute with modern suspension. Unfortunately the project was never completed and has been sitting in the garage for the last 16 years without being worked on and I'm ready to move on.
I will do my best to describe the vehicle as it is, but I cannot possibly list every detail here. The purchaser of this vehicle understands the it is being sold as-is. Be sure to read the info about the front suspension.
The car has a clean California title in my name and the car has been registered as planed non operational, so there are no late fees to pay when you go to register the car.
Details -
BodyThe car is a San Jose produced car and has been in California its whole life as far as I can tell. As such it has very little rust. There is some minor rust in a few places, but very minimal for a 1968. The car was freshly painted in a low quality job when I got it in 2003, so all the red panels are in that paint. The fenders were taken down to bare metal and primed. The original hood, deck lid, front apron were sold when I acquired the Shelby fiberglass replacement parts. The glass has some scratches, especially on the drives side window and the back glass.
Engine and Transmission:The car has no engine or transmission. It was originally a 302, and automatic car. I'm including both the automatic pedal and a set of manual pedals that I picked up for the car because I was going to convert it. The 302 that was in the car was not original, nor was the transmission and they have already been sold. The original driveshaft is included.
Shelby Fiberglass:I looked far and wide to find the highest quality Shelby fiberglass reproduction parts for this car. When you start to build a Shelby tribute you quickly learn that some fiberglass parts on the market are simply trash, and its challenging to find well made items. I ended up buying many items twice and reselling the lower quality parts. The hood, nose, deck lid and tail light housing are the highest quality fiberglass parts you can buy. I do not have the upper side scoops, but I recommend you purchase them from Mustang's Unlimited, they are by far the best quality versions on the market. The lower side scoops that are included with the car are not good quality. You should buy the Mustang's Unlimited version to complete the car. The Shelby bumper brackets are included. 67 Shelby tail lights are included. The fiberglass parts are not mounted to the car and are sitting in place for the pictures.
Suspension:The front was in process of being converted to a custom SLA coil-over set up similar to what Griggs Racing sells for $10,000. It includes a modified sn95 tubular k member, sn95 tubular lower control arms, sn95 spindles, a Griggs Racing sn95 spindle ball joint adapter and custom length adjustable upper control control arms. The rack and pinion is from a 2000 Mustang GT. The brakes are 13" discs from a 2001 Cobra Mustang. Koni yellow single adjustable coil overs and Hypercoil springs are included but not installed. The suspension is just in a mock up phase, the car can be rolled on a trailer as it is with no problem, but it is not complete. You can either finish the front suspension, or go with an off the shelf front clip from one of a dozen companies that sell them: Heidts, Detroit Speed, TCP, Mustangs to Fear, Griggs, and many many more. This is a great option for a Coyote swap if thats what you are in to. Or you can weld the lower control arm mounts back on and return the suspension to stock or something bolt on. The lower control arm mounts were carefully removed so there should be no problem, or you can purchase fresh new ones. Basically any part on these cars can now be purchased aftermarket.
The rear end is an open diff ford 9" with drum brakes and hasn't been touched.
Interior:The car includes 1970 Mach 1 high back seats that had the upholstery replaced 16 years ago, but have been sitting in the car since then. All the interior fastback specific body panels are included. The trap door has holes cut out for oval speakers. The car comes with a new carpet set. Most of the interior is either black or in primer. It is 90+% complete, but not assembled.
Exhaust:A new 2.25" stainless steel exhaust kit is included.
Parts bins:There are lots of parts going to go into the car in about a dozen storage bins some are new items like weatherstripping as well as items that had been removed from the car for restoration. There is too much for me to list.
If you have questions please ask before bidding. I want you to understand fully what you are purchasing so there are no surprises and we all feel happy with this transaction.
I'm not in a rush to sell so please don't bother me with low ball offers.
The buyer of this car will need to arrange for transportation including the multiple tubs of parts that are included. I can try to put as much into the car as possible, and cover it with a car cover for transportation, but the best solution will be if you can show up with a truck and flat bed trailer.
