1937 Ford Other Pickups

Duke Hallock's original '37 Ford Turbocharged V8 pickup. Born Luther Emmett Hallock, Duke created the Hallock (Duvall style) windshield in his auto shop class at Fullerton High School in the early '30s for '28-'29 Ford roadsters and also was said to make only one for a '32 Ford roadster that is still on Jackie Howerton's Deuce roadster. (O'Brien Trucking now reproduces the Hallock windshield). Duke was an original member of the Fullerton Knight Riders in 1934.

Duke bought this 1937 Ford pickup new in '37 and used it for a test-bed, pulling out the original V8 60 and began installing T7 Garrett AiRsearch Turbochargers on a number of different engines he dropped into the pickup. He also used the pickup as a push truck and a tow truck to haul his roadsters to the Dry Lakes and Bonneville Salt Flats to race them, one was the 1925 Giovanine/Spurgin Chevy roadster in 1948 as seen in one of the attached photos. The 1937 pickup had a Y-Block Ford V8 in it at one time and now is in the last iteration with a late '60s Ford 289 V8 with the T7 Turbo on it. (Duke was head of the Turbocharger Program at AiRsearch in California). C4 automatic transmission, 9" Ford rear end. Ansen Sprint mag wheels at all four corners and even has one as the spare!

The interior has not changed much over the years. Very cool original Cragar steering wheel on the stock column, Stewart Warner gauges tucked neatly into the dash, Ansen floor shifter that controls the C4, power brakes and a bench seat of unknown origin with a center armrest.

The truck was painted a shade of green before it was last shot in the Copper color you see today. And the paint is still very nice! Dent and rust free as far as I can tell, original bed and tailgate and Duke added the turn signal lights on the fenders front and rear and the small visor over the windshield that identified the truck as being Duke's. All the glass is good, windows roll up and down with ease. Even still has an "old school" keyed alarm with a siren he installed ...and it still works! The more you dissect the truck the more you see what a genius Duke was. I replaced the battery and it fired right up and runs extremely smooth. The '37 drives very well 'for an old truck' and steers like a truck (the power steering will be your arms).

The Duke '37 presents very well and is a true piece of early Hot Rod and Dry Lakes racing history! This is the one and only.....

Duke's '37 Turbo pickup was featured in the December 1964 issue of 'American Rodding' magazine and the late Pat Ganahl wrote "The Duke Hallock Story" in the late '90s that appeared in Rod & Custom magazine. I just wish Pat Ganahl was still with us to see that Duke's pickup actually survived. The second and the thirteenth photo are the ones from the 1964 American Rodding magazine to compare with the pickup's photos taken last week. I am including the magazine and a lot of other Hallock history with the truck. The last photo shows an ad taken from a copy of the S.C.T.A. News in the early '40s of Duke and his brother Jud's Speed Shop in La Habra California.

The pickup had been tucked away in Arizona for many years, driven occasionally. It was passed down to a best friend of Duke's upon his passing and then went to the daughters of the best friend. I bought the pickup from them after at least fifteen years of trying.

Here is your chance to own a true piece of early hot rod and dry lakes racing history.
