1948 Ford Super Deluxe
A friend of our family who used to own a well known local classic car restoration shop had this car in dry storage for many years. A couple of years ago he retired and has been slowly pulling vehicles from storage, getting them running well, and selling them. This one really spoke to me. Our friend has excellent attention to detail, so he took his time fixing various little things to make the car roadworthy. That means all new brakes, wheel bearings, shocks, starter, battery, generator, water pumps, belts and hoses, distributor, points, spark plugs, fuel tank, fuel pump, rebuilt carburetor, etc.. That got the car running, driving, and stopping. All the gauges and lights work well. Once I bought the car, I wanted to give it the feel of a traditional hot rod and also make it even more drivable. So I put on new Diamondback Auburn Radial whitewall tires (7.50-16 rear/6.00-16 front), Red's headers (original exhaust manifold was cracked) with Smithy's glasspack mufflers (sounds perfect - not loud), and a finned aluminum "frog mouth" air cleaner (original oil bath air cleaner is included). There are extra original parts in the trunk such as the original heater box and such. The engine runs and sounds great with excellent throttle response. But it does have some blow-by (oil vapor) coming out the road draft tube under the engine. I'm guessing it may have a stuck piston ring and the car needs more miles put on it, but I don't know for sure. I just don't have the time to tinker with it like I want to, and I have too many toys.About half of the 100 miles I’ve put on this car have been on the freeway. Even with the blow-by it’s still very drivable. I think she would go 70+ if you really wanted to, but she likes to cruise comfortably around 55-60mph.
The paint and interior seem to be all original, but don't hold me to that. At first glance the paint almost looks like gray primer at the moment, but it's actually factory dark gray. It would shine up really well with a little buffing compound. I already polished a little spot on the front fender to see what it would look like, and it came out great. Trim and brightwork are in pretty great shape for being 74 years old. No rust or rot anywhere that I've found, which is pretty exceptional I think. Original spare is still in the trunk. The undercarriage just has a light coating of surface rust in some places.
