Awesome Paint/390 P Code Engine/4-Speed Manual
1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible
1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible
For those of you who used their formative years to educate and mostly entertain themselves with the boob tube, you probably caught an episode or two of Andy of Mayberry. A number of awesome cars were featured in the Andy Griffith Show over its nine year run, but Griffith's squad cars were always Ford Galaxie 500 sedans. Fords were increasingly featured as the show reached its later years, undoubtedly because of a sponsorship from the Ford Motor Company.
For consignment, a 1963 Galaxie 500 that I would classify as a stunner and even go as far to proclaim it is a piece of black licorice eye candy! Raven Black (Nevermore!) and plenty of chrome trimming adornments and beautiful badging, snappy wheels, and this is a very nice example donning our main showroom in P code format (Interceptor).
Exterior
Raven Black in a respray covers straight steel panels, and good gaps. Metal is near perfect, paint is shiny and deep, and is highlighted by an upper trim spear that works its way to the rear, heads briefly downward, then returns to just in front of the front quarter. In front of the downward turn on the rear quarter, is a series of vertical rectangles which add to the jet age mystique. Dual front headlights within a well preserved shiny and fine detailed designed egg crate grille has a nice cloisonn badge in the center. The front bumper is very nice. As we move to the rear round jet engine style taillights have beautiful bezels and 4 spikes that come to the center and form a circle around a backup light. More egg crate on the rear below the trunk, and below is a nicely preserved rear bumper. Not to be forgotten is a canvas convertible top in black with a plastic rear window, clean and clear. Polished 15-inch Keystone Classic wheels looking like a 4 leaf clover design, adorn all 4 corners. All metal on the car is original save for 2 small sections that the consignor even saved to show how little metalwork was done.
Interior
With a swing of the doors we will be seeing red, all beautifully restored to original configuration, and all in fab condition. The front split bench is black tuck and roll inserts and smooth red bolsters with some white piping racing around the border of the two. The rear seat sprawls from panel to panel and mimics the front. All upholstery is new old stock material and was hand sewn to make the seats better than new. A very clean and shiny red original dash and steering wheel are noted, and all is looking futuristic for 1963. The instrument cluster has a spaceship styling to it, and we see an original AM/FM radio in the center which is an aluminum polished horizontal strip below the red metal still on the dash front. Deep red carpet floods the floors and sitting proudly on the hump within reach of the driver is a floor shifter which was totally unexpected.
Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and we are visually grabbed by this stunning P code Interceptor engine in 390ci format. It sports a solid lifter cam, 406 exhaust headers and all aluminum intake and a 4bbl Holley carburetor. A dual point distributor had converted this car to electronic ignition. There is an optional chrome package which adorns the engine with chromed valve covers, air cleaner cover, and radiator/fan guard. All else is shiny and black with no rust or corrosion inside this engine bay. On the back is a 4-speed manual Borg Warner transmission throwing power rearward to a Ford 9-inch 3.50 rear axle.
Undercarriage
Underneath has also been fully attended to with black painted structural steel and floorpans and rockers. This car was optioned as a Interceptor car so it has similar to a 427ci Galaxie. Options include rerouted brake lines, heavy sway-bars, 3/8 inch gas line from the like new tank, 3 inch wide front brakes, extra pays in the rear springs and 15 inch wheels. Drum brakes are on all 4 corners, and a Flowmaster exhaust is now installed and is clean and rust free.
Drive-Ability
As expected from a car in this condition, she fired right up, and with a lifting of my clutch foot, took off smoothly. This car is a great large cruiser, smooth ride, and no creaking or squeaking when turning the corners. Plenty of power for the with some to spare, good handling for any evasive action that may be necessary. Plenty of good braking for the stop. I did notice the wipers are not working.
A beautiful example of the Galaxie in P code format. Beefed up suspension, excellent exterior, NOS interior red, and lots of power from the P coded mill, and it does not get much better than this example if you are in the market for some 1960's power iron.
