1932 Ford Highboy Roadster

1932 Ford Highboy Roadster

Because channeling a car is more complicated and requires a lot of work to reconstruct the floorboards and body mounts, many of the younger hot rodders left the body sitting on top of the frame in the original configuration. Channeling made the bodies sit lower and look sleeker than the cars with the body sitting on the frame. Those became known as highboy roadsters. It is safe to define the highboy as a roadster or coupe that had the fenders removed but maintained factory body mounting configuration.

For consignment a custom built Wescott body, a "fiery" paint job, and a 350ci V8 bored .30 over give us the basics for this Hot Rod, and indeed it is hot in more ways than one. Featured in a PPG calendar, it is a bright star in the hallowed halls of Classic Auto Mall, this 1932 Highboy Hot Rod from which emanates a sizzle in the north hallway I can hear from the showroom.

Exterior
This rod wins the award for best airbrushed flame job. Fiberglass body is just perfect and bathed in an endlessly deep "fiery red" paint that may be hot to the touch, so stay back! If you do not get burnt by the paint, the flames will get you which lick rearward in orange and yellow from the grille and radiator surrounding the back of the open cowled hood. She's open to the elements, as true California hot rods were aiding in weight loss and forgoing comforts to go faster. No fenders or running boards with a simple single glass windshield slightly tinted (shields your eyes from the ultra bright paint!). On the back of the rounded rear is more artful airbrushing "burnt" on with MotiV8Tor nameplate...apt. Contrasting and adding bling is all chromed open suspension which is near perfect. In front are 15-inch Billet Specialties polished wheels wrapped by 25x7.50R15's and on back more Billet Specialties polished beauties this time in 17 inch 29.5x6.50-R17's. Buckets of water PLEASE!! and keep 'em coming...we have a 4 alarmer!!

Interior
I need a chance to cool off after that exterior, so I hop into two tone Camel leather for the interior, past paneled leather door panels and into the beautifully crafted bench which uses the interplay of the light and dark Camel and Caramel colored leathers and smooth and tuck and roll pattern to create this awesome interior. A simple exterior body matching dash with the central chromed oval Haneline gauge cluster has a Lokar tall shaft shifter directly below with a caramel boot. This all floats in a calm sea of tan carpeting showing some dirt staining, but overall, very nice. A 2-point racing belt keeps the driver secure on their side of the big bench. Noted and a shout out to the adjustable steering column in chrome, with a drilled 3-point chrome and wood rimmed steering wheel atop...round the bend she goes. Cool!

Drivetrain
Consigner states 355 cubes due to a boring .30 over. A dual 4-barrel carburetor feeds loads of fossils into the blown mill featuring a Weiand 144 Supercharger (as if the dual 4's weren't enough!). TH350 3-speed tranny is on back and a Ford 9-inch pumpkin with 3.70 cruising gears spins the rear tires. Now you are definitely getting warmer.

Undercarriage
Another work of art and passionate about it looking good where its rarely seen. This undercarriage is absolutely beautiful with all chromed surfaces shined to the nines. If it's not chromed, its stainless and is also polished. If it's not chromed or polished stainless its perfect red fiberglass. Even the brake trimmings are polished. Shine on you crazy fiery red diamond!

Drive-Ability
Not only will you look good, but you will be spending a lot of time pushed into the back of your seat with the blown dual quads on top of the bored out 350. It "fired" right up, and the test track was not match for this beast. I now know why there are racing belts on the driver's seat. All was working perfectly, and I can unequivocally say this car is a goer and a shower in spades.

Definitely one of the hottest hot rods in house, runs like a speeding clock, and looks all the California highboy part, hot rodding at its finest. Just the paint job will lure you to the car like a moth to the open flame...ssssssssizzzzzle...Poof!
