1965 Mustang Fastback Project Car No Reserve

Price: - Item location: Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, United States
Description:

1965 Ford Mustang

Up for auction is this 1965 Mustang Fastback.Recently hauled out of a barn in Pennsylvania, it retains its original six-cylinder drive train. This car is a serious project.Nothing here is going to “Buff Out” so if that’s what you want, keep looking. This is not the car for you.

The Bad:As you can see in the pictures, there’s lots of rust on this Metuchen-built car to repair. The worst of it is behind the B pillar to the taillight panel. The springs are breaking through the trunk floors, and the rear frame rails need to be replaced, along with the trunk floors, inner and out wheel housings, plus sections of the interior floor (probably a whole replacement is best here, rather than trying to piece together separate parts).1965 models didn’t come with any torque boxes but they should be added for structural support. There is some rust in the rear window channel.

The Good:The car comes with a complete set of good quality, used replacement bolt-on metal. The fenders, doors, deck lid and hood are all in useable condition.I would clean up these and not use reproduction Chinese metal. The interior is also complete with a fold-down rear seat and all the fiberglass pieces unique to a fastback. The only interior piece missing is a passenger seat, easily obtainable at your local swap meet. All the fastback unique brackets are still in the car.All of the outside window trim is still with the car (excluding left rear lower windshield trim).Yes, virtually all of this stuff is available reproduction, but why buy that when you can use the original parts?

The Better:The original data plate is still attached to the car ‘s driver’s door and reads:

63AFastback w/Standard Interior

DDynasty Green

26Black Vinyl Trim

02T02 June 1965

23DSO Philadelphia

33.20:1 Rear Axle

Buck Tag is also attached to the radiator core support and reads:

5T09T171XXX VIN

63AFastback w/Standard Interior

DDynasty Green

All glass is present and undamaged.Window crank mechanisms are still in the original doors. The engine compartment and body frame rails are in good condition.I’m sure something will need a patch, but the shock towers are not cut for grease zerks, and the fender aprons are not rusty (don’t know how that failed to happen, but it didn’t!).The A pillars are not damaged and the car is not sagging, bent or “Droopy.”

The engine is not stuck, but I haven’t tried to fire it.I figure the new owner will decide whether to rebuild what is here or do a Shelby clone car.Original six-cylinder cars (especially fastbacks) are getting scarce, but that’s the new owner’s call.At least here, you have the choice to stay with the original drivetrain or go whatever custom route you wish. The car retains its original 13-inch wheels, 4-lug hubs and 8-inch rear end.If you wanted to buy the least expensive fastback you could in 1965, this is it.There are ZERO options on this car.

The Best:It’s a complete 1965 Mustang Fastback car (with its original drivetrain intact) that won’t have you chasing down a lot of parts.Clear title and documented 76,000 original miles.Offered at NO RESERVE.This car sells to the highest bidder.
