This one-owner truck is one of 2,585 red Lightning examples made in 1993 and one of only 5,276 total Lightning models cranked out that year. It was a sports/performance version of the F-150, designed by Ford’s Truck Division and released by Ford’s SVT (Special Vehicle Team) division. This example was made in June 1993 at Ford’s Wayne, Michigan truck factory. Finished in Vermillion (code EP), the truck’s paint and trim are overall very good order. The truck’s bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy, the battery appears new, the cargo bed is clean and tidy and there’s a sliding rear window. A front air dam with fog lamps and color-matched bumpers from the Bronco fit tightly to the body. This truck has a 117-inch wheelbase and a 5,750 GVWR and included with a color-matched ARE hard tonneau cover that is not shown in photos. This truck rolls on Goodyear Eagle RS-A radials, size 275/60R17, at all four corners. Each tire is mounted on a special factory cast-aluminum wheel with unique Lightning badging. The wheels are in good, original order while the tires have good tread depth and are in very good order. The Lightning shared its basic platform structure with the regular F-150, but modifications were made to many vehicle systems. Ford introduced the Lightning to compete with primarily the Chevrolet 454 SS, in an effort to enhance the sporty, personal-use image of the Ford F-Series pickup. The Lightning was powered by a special 240 horsepower version of the 351 CID V-8 engine. The engine was based on an existing block but Ford engineers fitted it with high flow rate “GT40” intake and heads. Like all factory 351s, the Lightning’s engine was equipped with hypereutectic pistons to increase response, output and durability. The engine was also fitted with stainless steel “shorty” headers. The Ford E4OD automatic transmission was the only available transmission for the Lightning. An aluminum driveshaft connected the transmission to 4.10:1 gearing in the limited-slip differential. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes with anti-lock in the rear, power locks, power windows, power seats, cruise control and a Cobra Citizens’ Band radio. This initial Lightning featured performance handling developed by world-champion driver Jackie Stewart. The suspension had custom-calibrated shocks, front and rear anti-roll bars and a special leaf in the rear, tipped with a rubber snubber that acted as a traction bar and controlled rear wheel hop during hard acceleration. To enhance the Lightning chassis, the thicker frame rails from the four-wheel drive F-250 were used to increase rigidity. Additional gusseting was added to the frame at high-stress locations, such as immediately behind the front suspension and over the rear axle. Suspension modifications provided a one-inch front and 2.5-inch rear drop in ride height. Stock, the Lightning was capable of achieving 0.88 g lateral acceleration, while it retained almost all of the hauling and trailer-towing capabilities of the normal short-wheelbase F-150.Inside, the instrument panel has a 120-mph speedometer and blacked-out trim, which differentiated the Lightning from normal F-150s. Bucket seats with electrically adjustable side bolsters and lumbar supports were part of the package and here, the two-tone charcoal ones are in great shape. The corresponding carpet is in good, original order, as is the neutral headliner. A two-spoke steering wheel faces the driver and the instrument panel, with its full array of gauges, is in good, original shape. The inner door liners look great. A column-mounted shift lever and an AM/FM stereo with cassette player, digital clock and four speakers complete the interior. Introduced as a 1993 model, the Ford SVT Lightning is a high-performance version of the F-150 that was produced by the Ford Special Vehicle Team (SVT). Intended as a competitor for the Chevrolet 454SS, the SVT Lightning was derived from the F-150; to improve its handling, extensive modifications were made to the front and rear suspension and frame. a 240 hp version of the 5.8L V-8, the Lightning used a heavy-duty four-speed automatic transmission from the F-350. While slower in acceleration than the GMC Syclone, the Lightning retained nearly all of the towing and payload capacity of a standard Ford F-150. Produced from 1993 to 1995. Competition to this Ford in 1993 included Chevrolet’s 454 SS half-ton truck and GMC’s Syclone mini pickup truck.
