1971 Ford LTD Convertible

1971 Ford LTD Convertible

"Luxury Trim Decor" is where the LTD gets its moniker. Introduced as the highest trim level of the full-size Ford model range, the LTD introduced options and features normally reserved for more luxurious Lincoln and Mercury models. The largest vehicle produced by Ford in North America for most of its production. This is some speculation based on Australian marketing brochures where LTD was referred to as "Lincoln type design" for America, it remained Luxury Trim Decor.

For consignment, a 1971 version of the LTD in convertible form. This means it will have a split bench front seat, a 351 Windsor V8, and a 3-speed automatic transmission. This current car is showing in unrestored mostly original condition. A consigner stated 22,000 original miles (not verified), and of course the convertible top.

Exterior
As one of the largest creations of the day coming out of the Ford factory, this large steel slabbed car shows well minded gaps, and is bathed in a respray of now white paint. There are some scratches in the paint, and areas of rust spotting, particularly near the rear quarter bottoms. A large side trim just above the rocker is showing some wear and slight rusting as well. Bumpers show some beginnings of rust, and the chromed side rearview mirrors are heavily pitted. The black canvas top moves up and down smoothly, has a tear repaired with black duct tape and has a clear rear glass window. On all corners are standard dish wheel covers and low mileage radials.

Interior
Green is a nice contrasting color and bathes the interior vinyl. Simple but elegant door panels show this green vinyl and a small insert of wood appliqu surrounded by shiny trim. Inside a large split back bench is upfront, and another non split back bench for the backseat. The original dash is nice and clean with a newer installed radio, and all remaining controls and gauges remain original. Green carpet for the floors showing nicely.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is an unrestored and original 351ci Windsor V8. This is topped with a 2-barrel carburetor, and a C4 3-speed automatic. On the rear is a Ford 9" differential.

Undercarriage
Surface rust is noted on all the suspension and drivetrain parts, and the floorpans, rockers and toe kicks have been sprayed in black. We can assume they had the similar surface rust on them. All is structurally sound and appears well taken care of on the grease maintenance on the suspension and steering. Independent coil springs for the front and a 4 link with coil springs on the back with power disc brakes upfront, and power drums for the rear.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and good driver with no noticeable kinks, with smooth acceleration and shifting, bias free braking, and reasonable cornering. All functions were working during the test drive.

Could be a survivor we are looking at with some faults but remaining a low mileage original. A turnkey car that can be taken to the next level, or just enjoyed as is which will work fine for anyone. Middle class never looked so good!
