1993 Ford F-150 XLT PICKUP SHORT BED SOUTHERN TRUCK 302 V8 AUTO
Undercarriage In 20+ years of owning ’92-’96 F150s and Broncos, I’ve been on a roll lately with finding a few trucks with beautiful undercarriages, and this pickup is no exception. There are so many factory tags, decals, and paint marks on parts, you start to lose count. It's so incredibly cool to see all of these factory markings on a 27 year old truck! It's beautiful. Note that the undercarriage was undercoated early in its life...likely at the factory or dealer. In the photos, you can see stone chips and the more pale look of the undercoating, backing up that it's been there for quite some time. I'm a preservationist, so I'm not grabbing cans of undercoating to hide anything. This truck had undercoating applied early in its life, so I left it intact and protected the rest of the undercarriage the way I know best:After meticulously spending a day and a half wiping down the undercarriage, I used a trick used by my Dad back in the day: I filled a pump sprayer with a gallon of WD40 and soaked the hell of out the underside of the truck. It dripped for a day. If you plan to drive the truck more often, I would coat the undercarriage with a “stickier†product like Fluid Film. I love that stuff. Also note that at some point over the years, the spare tire was removed from under the truck. Mechanicals and How Does She Drive? Miles are still low, at just over 99,000, but this pickup was used sparingly the last several years, and some mechanical updating was needed. The Michelin tires on it looked nearly new, but had weather-checked sidewalls, which is not cool. A new set of Goodyear Wranglers have been installed, and road force balanced. The coolant was flushed thoroughly, with fresh coolant and a conditioner installed. The rear differential fluid and gasket was changed, and friction modifier added because of the limited slip rear end. The transmission fluid was changed, and a new Wix filter installed. Finally, the oil was changed, with a fresh Motorcraft filter. The air filter was also changed with a new one from Wix. Upon inspection, I noticed one rear wheel cylinder was damp, so BOTH wheel cylinders were replaced with new ones from Raybestos, and the brakes were properly bled and shoes adjusted for a nice pedal. Under the hood, the truck was ready for a thorough tune-up. Plugs and wires had been changed over the years, but I didn't mess around: new Motorcaft plugs and wires were installed, with a new cap, rotor, and coil. I've gotten into the habit of just installing a new coil right away, as I've noticed some varying voltage from the older units. I noticed the upper radiator hose has been replaced, and the serpentine belt looks fairly new. While flushing the coolant, I noticed some cracks in the heater hoses, so both hoses and clamps were replaced. Finally, the Motorcaft battery shows from 2016 and holds good charge during storage. Finally, the truck does not leak any fluids, while it sat in the same spot over the last couple weeks. After performing this work, I've driven the truck an additional 100 miles or so and it runs and drives fabulously. Please view the videos of the cold start and test drives, or come on out to Wisconsin and drive it yourself! The truck fires right up, idles high like it should, then comes right down after a minute or so. Five minutes behind the wheel and it's obvious this truck has been pampered its entire life. It idles well, shifts like it should, and accelerates like a strong 302 should. No shimmies, shakes, or other annoyances. The incredibly smooth ride of this pickup (especially for a short bed), tells me the shocks, front end, and bushings are good. Visually, everything looks good, too. I also included photos of the brakes, so you can see they're well within service specs. At this time, I believe this truck is ready to reliably drive for the next owner. BUT, please remember that this pickup is 27 years old and not your 2015 Toyota. I've tried to cover all the common things I know on these F150's, but parts can fail on a nearly 30 year old vehicle. This pickup has a clear title in my name. The Bottom Line The truck starts right up and idles incredibly well. She runs, accelerates, and shifts like she should, and is QUIET. It doesn't pull and rides like you remember them back in the '90s. At this time, I am comfortable taking the truck for longer drives and have put about 100 miles on it since performing the tune-up. As mentioned in the videos, I think a truck like this is the perfect kind to own: you're going to get a TON of compliments on it, but you don't have to be afraid to drive it. This would be a fantastic weekend truck, daily driver for the summer, or even an over the top presentable work truck if you choose. I am so excited to put this truck in the hands of a new caretaker.
