This Model A is an incredible piece of automotive history. Ford’s most expensive Model A body style in 1930, the Cabriolet. Different from the roadster and much more rare, with production numbers totaling only 25,868 units, this body style has a fixed windshield and side windows that roll up and down. The convertible coupe as some might call it. This car is in absolutely incredible shape. It runs and drives like the day is was purchased new. Still retaining its original engine and body it was restored to the highest levels in the late 1970’s. This car was awarded First place by AACA “Antique Automobile Club of America” in 1977. Purchased by a local Ford dealer for his private collection in 1990 this Model A has been in storage ever since. Offered for sale for the first time since 1990.

I am selling this for a very good friend of mine who purchased it from the widow of the late owner. It has held up very well over the years. It took very little to get it up and running again after it was purchased. It purrs just like a Model A should and it starts, drives and stops like it was restored yesterday. I grew up around my father who had a love for model A Fords. He still owns two of them today and I have owned one myself. You can tell when a restoration was done correctly. You get a feeling by the way the car runs, drives, stops and starts and this car is as solid as they come. You will know it immediately after the first time you sit behind the wheel of this cabriolet.

This car was completely restored in the 70’s. It won first place in the AACA in 1977. It has been driven 1100 miles since being restored and is fresh out of a long 20+ year storage. It is not as fine as it was in 1977 and it is showing its age a little bit, but make no mistake, the originality and condition of the car is remarkable.

Details

All Cabriolet bodies were made by Briggs and this one retains its original body ID tag, showing number 161-11157. The rust free body was painted in Bronson Yellow with a Seal yellow body belt and rumble lid, accented by Orange pinstripes. It features a T8 tan top, with a Bedford Cord pleated seat and matching door cards. It has a Mahogany dash plate, door reveals and uprights.

It is important to know, this is the original body which upon my inspection looks to have never had any rust repair done to it. It also retains its original fenders, aprons, running boards, wheels, hubcaps, all stainless and Heinz electric wiper system. The deluxe options on this car make it stand out as well, to include the locking quail radiator cap, side mount mirrors, running board step plates, trunk rack with trunk and the dual spare tire locks.

The engine runs absolutely flawlessly. The Serial number on the engine is A3165467, which matches the title and if you do your research correctly falls into the April 1930 year model serial numbers. It fires up immediately and has plenty of power. It shifts better than any Model A Ford I have ever driven. It steers and stops like a brand new Model A. I cannot stress enough just how well done the restoration was when it was completed years ago.

The top goes up and down effortlessly, just like it should. All of the chrome is still in very nice condition, it could benefit from a nice thorough polishing but it would I dare say look almost new if you did. All of the chrome around the side windows and front windshield frame are still very nice. The only things that I have found inoperable are, 1. The low beam light on the passenger side and 2. the Ahooga horn. I am sure it just needs a bulb and the horn needs to be freed up and oiled up. Cowl lights, running lights and brake lights, even the windshield wiper works as it should.

Summary

This will make someone a great car. It is in great shape and I believe to be one of the most solid examples you will find anywhere. The restoration is showing its age, but with a little effort I believe you can bring the car back to a very high standard. I would say you could fly in and drive it home, it may take you a while to get back, but I have no doubt it would make the journey.
