1936 Ford 5 Window Coupe

1936 Ford 5 Window Coupe

In the midst of its second wild success, Ford continued to refine the lines of their sedans and coupes with every year getting a redesign with some slight but effective aerodynamic and styling changes. Their slogan "Beauty was built in" was heavily pushed in magazine advertising, and Ford felt it was well worth the glitzy ads to sell more cars.

For consignment a nice original looking non rodded Ford 5-Window Coupe. This car was used for a few years by the consigner as his daily driver, then put into storage until 2005, when a total, well documented restoration began. Completed by Jim's Classic Restoration, Monroe Township, New Jersey in 2013, it has barely been used since this time. Some parades and local car shows is all that has been clocked on this very nice example of the '36 5-Window Coupe.

Exterior
Washington Blue paint in nice condition bathes the exterior panels. Every now and again there just hints of slight orange peel texture in the paint, but they are few and far between. Wonderfully formed steel curves abound on this car, and they are accented with either brite-work, or just plain shine. Bumpers with their inverted eyebrow center dip, headlight bezels, handles and mirrors are all excellently restored with no dimpling or rusting. From its vertical ribbed "shield" style grille complete with blue oval and V8 hood adornment we are rolling in style. A shout out to the curved back where a mother in law seat (rumble seat for the politically correct) is hidden but opens with the twist of a handle. This seat is covered with faux leather vinyl in tan. Nice running boards with excellent rubber connect the curvaceous fenders. A spare tire covered in steel and chrome rests above the rear bumper and hangs from the rear of this car. Nicely contrasting black and yellow painted steel wheels are topped with dog dish V8 engraved chromed center caps. These wheels are wrapped with correct and proper wide whites.

Interior
Clean tan textured broadcloth covers the door panels, and tufted bench. A dark brown sprayed dash houses original Ford gauges and is trimmed in chrome in the art deco style. A single aftermarket gauge hangs below the dash, and fronting it is a restored banjo style steering wheel which is to die for...it's just beautiful. Black rubber covers the floors and mohair cloth is on the ceiling. You have to love the round pedals for the brake and clutch.

Drivetrain
A V8 with 239 Cubes in flathead form is buttoned up under the side hinged hood. A single 2-barrel carburetor tops this mill, and a 3-speed manual transmission and 3.78 gears make up the drivetrain.

Undercarriage
Beautifully restored black steel, clean transverse leaf springs and mechanical drums all around.

Drive-Ability
It was like stepping back in time with this wonderfully restored original looking example of the 5-Window Coupe. It started right up, ran beautifully, and the mechanical brakes need to be pushed but they do work. It was a nice leisurely spin that was also a head turner. I love these test drives!

Good paint, nice chrome and fancy but simple interior, and full restoration completed in 2013, all mechanically sound and a good driver. For the collector who wants a nicely presenting car that is definitely a driver and a survivor.
