Description:
1974 Ford E-Series Van
Here's the story - after winning the bid on this van in July, 2003, my father and I flew to Reno NV and took a bus to Truckee CA to bring this van back to Pittsburgh. What's interesting is all my Dad did to find out if this van was worth buying was to have the seller put the phone up to the engine and had him rev it a couple times. We packed up some clothes and my Dad put some tools in a briefcase and off we went - I was only 10 at the time. You have to understand, my Dad's a mechanic and has been owning and working on 1968-74 Ford vans for a very long time. He figured that if there was a transmission or clutch problem, he could easily repair it. All we had to do was make it to Reno and he could fix it to get it the rest of the way. Nothing needed to be fixed - we drove it all the back to Pittsburgh in about 3 days. This van was undercoated in some point in it's early history - which has saved it from a lot of the rust that might typically have attacked it - although there is some surface rust and even some rust through on the driver's side rear quarter panel. It's not totally rust free but can certainly be repaired.
When I rebuilt the engine, it was only because my Dad said it should have hardened exhaust valve seats so it wouldn't burn the valves on unleaded gas. This engine and all of the other engine parts that come with this van (see list) are pre-emission. I converted it to an electronic distributor and, if I was going to keep it, I would put in a new dual point mechanical distributor. With high fuel prices, having a manual shift is really helpful because you can push in the clutch and coast downhill.
To recap: This is a 1974 Ford Econoline Van with a manual shift on the column. It is in running condition with a clean title. It needs a battery and at least two tires (15"). It has a rebuilt engine (with less than 10,000 miles on it). Has a new clutch - and, comes with an extra barely used clutch. Has power steering and power brakes. The power steering valve and cylinder are rebuilt and the hoses replaced.
I drove it daily to and from High School and to other teenager activities (2009-2012) and, kept it in my parents' garage when I left for College - intending to complete the restoration when I returned. Now, I'm more interested in getting the money for a down payment on a house.
If you're interested in this model of van, you won't believe all the extra parts I have included. You can always sell what you don't use!
