1966 Ford Mustang Coupe

1966 Ford Mustang Coupe

Born Oct. 15, 1924, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, to Italian immigrants, Lee Iacocca went to work for the Ford Motor Company as an engineer after finishing college. Not long afterward, he switched to Ford's marketing and sales side. Iacocca quickly rose through the ranks and was made Ford president in 1964. During his tenure, he championed the highly successful Mustang but clashed with Ford chief Henry Ford II, who fired him in 1978 after 32 years with the company. He took over struggling Chrysler, now part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles a few months later and brought the automaker back from the brink of bankruptcy by going to Washington in 1979 and persuading the federal government to guarantee $1.2 billion in loans to the company. He closed plants and cut the workforce and wages at all levels, including his own salary to $1 a year. When the company rebounded, he made $20 million.

For consignment an example of the Iacocca brainchild in the flesh here in the halls of Classic Auto Mall. This example has had some sporadic work showing some highlights, and other areas are going to be left open to the new owner's interpretation. Read on and start your creative juices flowing.

Exterior
Ivy Green Metallic covers the exterior of this car. Steel panels are straight and rust free. The prancing horse leads the way and directly above is a matte black sprayed hood which adds contrast to the Ivy Green. Badging and brite-work is all present and accounted for and shows very minor dimpling, but is remaining mostly very shiny. Paint is in good condition with some dulling and minor faults. Under the door panel on passenger's side is showing surface rusting. The cove trim on the rear fenders is looking good, as well as standard Mustang styled steel wheels on all 4 corners.

Interior
With the paint a few years ago also came new front buckets in black vinyl, a Hurst shifter, and new carpet as well as a dash pad. Otherwise interior is original with back 2 plus 2 seats in need of a good cleaning, and dash with gauge package option could be refreshed. Headliner is tight and shows also in black.

Drivetrain
Replacing the original engine is a Ford 302ci V8 with an Edelbrock intake manifold and Holly 4-barrel carburetor atop. A 4-speed manual top loader transmission and a Ford 8-inch rear complete this drivetrain.

Undercarriage
Seeing black and very slight surface rust, we note several areas of floor pan repairs, as well as some where the unibody rockers are, and near the fenders. It is all sound now, with independent coil spring suspension in front, and leaf springs on the rear. 4-wheel drum brakes are all in working condition.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and good driver, clutch is tight, brakes are good, and it gave us a smooth ride. New buckets are comfortable and have good padding and foam.

Overall a turnkey car with room for your creative interpretation on what level and finish you want to do next. Or just leave it alone and drive it for fun. Either way you will be the owner of the biggest craze to come along since the Corvette...the Mustang.
