Description:
1966 Ford Thunderbird
A running, driving, stopping 1966 Thunderbird hardtop.Let me say right up front that the pictures make this car look better than it is. It would be a major project to attempt to restore this car. It would, however, be very possible to make a cheap driver.
The car cranks good, the motor sounds ok, with no ticks or knocks. It does not overheat, and the alternator works. The transmission goes in forward and reverse, and seems to shift ok, The headlights and tail lights work. I have driven the car back and forth in the driveway, and around the block a time or two, at maybe 25-30 mph.
At MINIMUM, to make a driver, the car would need 2 or 3 tires, the brake booster rebuilt,valve stem seals, and some valve cover gaskets.
Here's the good and bad;
Good....cranks, runs, drives, stops (if you stand on the brakes). Headlights and tail lights work. The floors are fairly solid, and the door hinges are good, and the doors latch good. The glass is all there and is pretty good. Windows roll up and down. The power steering works ok. There is a whole trunk full of parts (pictured) as well as a pile of other trim parts and another complete front seat (not pictured). There is a new exhaust manifold in the trunk, and I'm pretty sure I have the steering wheel center cap. The car has what looks to be an almost new Edelbrock carb. I do have the other fender skirt. Oddly enough, the car has a very nice dash pad.The title is a Virginia title, which does not require notarization, and the VIN on the cowl matches the VIN on the title.
Bad... some doofus dyed the seats white. The seats are in pretty good shape, but the dye makes the leather stiff. The interior obviously needs cleaning. There is considerable rust, with minor bubbling up and down both sides, which someone has sort of attempted to patch some with bondo. The hood and the trunk lid are useable maybe, but pretty rusty. The trunk lip at the back is rusted away. Almost none of the gauges work. There apparently was an attempt to install, in place of the radio, an 8-track player, which is lying in the floor. The transmission leaks quite a bit, and the car smokes some out the passenger side exhaust. There is a good bit of oil blowing out the drivers side exhaust. I attribute both these to, I THINK, bad valve stem seals, although obviously there could be other, more serious issues. The swing-away steering wheel has been locked in place and no longer swings to the side. The gas that's in the car is old.The car should load ok, but in no way and by no means can it be driven home, unless you live here in Boone, NC.
Long and short, keep your expectations realistic and everybody will be happy.
