1965 Ford Mustang 2 dr. Coupe
A brief history... The Ford Mustang is the longest continuous running production model to date and it's believed to have saved the Ford Motor Company in time of great need. In the near future it just may be the only car Ford will be producing as the Mustang has been their flagship/ bread and butter for over 55 years. On March 5th 1964 the Dearborn MI. plant started building the very first Mustang, working hard to build enough cars to put at least one car in each of the dealerships across the county for the nationwide unveiling on Friday April 17 1964. That day was a big deal for Ford, with tons of press, advertising/ hype leading up to that day Ford hit a home run and set a record for the most units sold in a single day (a record that still stands today), over 22,000 units.Even if you walked into your local dealership on that day and said "I'll take it" chances were that you weren't driving away in your new Mustang because the car you were looking was needed to stay there to take more orders until Ford could catch up to the demand. This brings us to the car offered here... On March 27, just 22 days into production, the 318th Mustang built came off the line and ended up in the Land-O-lakes Wisconsin Ford dealership ready for it's unveiling. After finally taking delivery, carefully using and servicing the vehicle for 10 years the woman returned back to Dickman's Ford Lincoln Mercury with the desire for a larger vehicle. A new 1974 Ford Granada was decided on and with the condition of this Mustang being so impeccable the decision to not return the car to the lot but to keep this car for themselves. Julia Dickman became the new owner for a whopping $624.00 that day and the car remained in the families care until I purchased it a couple of years ago. Now about the car... I'm a huge fan of untouched original cars with low mileage and when I found this car I thought it was a pretty good one but to my surprise when I finally saw it in person and drove it I was blown away. The condition of this car was actually more impressive than I had expected. It's very hard to imagine that a car could remain this clean and untouched for 55years, a true survivor! Not every 36,000 mile car (even newer) looks this good. The trunk looks as if it was rarely opened and of course has all of it's original jacking equipment unique to the early cars. I you're familiar with 64 1/2 mustangs then you'll know that there are something like 120 differences between them and the cars built later that year that referred to as 1965's but the very early 64 1/2's even had some things unique onto them such as 13" 5 lug wheels on the 260 V8 cars most likely leftover from the Falcon Sprints. As you can imagine this car runs, drives and stops excellent. I'm fairly certain that this is the earliest low mi. unrestored Mustang in this kind of condition that you'll ever see for sale. Most anyone can find and restore a car to be more perfect than this but only a few can say "this is the way it came 55 years ago". This means not much to probably most people that like old cars but in the collector car world it carries a lot of weight "They can only be original once".
For the experts... you may see an aftermarket replacement fuel pump in a photo but that was temporary while the original Carter X pump was gone through and put back on. To be honest, the idea for putting this car up for sale comes from more of a responsibility to it's well being and to be appreciated by others. I almost wish it wasn't as nice of a car when I got it so I could just use it freely around town and I wouldn't stress about how I'm storing it. It's southern California under a good car cover under a car port but it should be in a proper garage or in a big collection for people to see it.I could go on about this car but for now I think you get the picture and I'm happy to answer any and all questions you may have as well as other pictures you may like to see.I'm attempting to attach a link here to 50 photos of the car... Let's hope this works, if not I'll sort it out soon.
