When it comes to vintage automobiles, California and the West Coast of the United States have always been the most desirable the world over for many reasons; the mild climate and the fact that many automotive trends started in California. The automobile is the perfect technological symbol of American culture, a tangible expression of our quest to level space, time, and class and a reflection of our relentless mobility, social and otherwise. You see automobiles advertised the world over described as California cars because at some point they were in California or drove through California. A true California car is one that was sold new in California and titled in California, one that has the original plates that are on that title is a true California car.We are liquidating a collection of 300 actual California cars. This is a collection that took 70 years to comprise. Most have the original paint and original California licence plates issued to them when they were new.
Up for a No RESERVE auction is a sweet little 1974 Ford Courier. This truck has spent the majority of its life at the beach house only used for trips to the hardware store. In other words this Courier has sat for the better part of its 45 year old life. It is a very original truck with original paint. It was imported from Japan and sold new in Hayward,CA and has spent its life on the coast of northern California. In 1971, Ford entered in to a partnership with Mazda to import their B-Series trucks in to the United States as a response to the unforseen popularity of the small Toyota and Nissan/Datsun pickups. This resulted in Ford having a 7% stake in Mazda (Ford acquired a 24.5% stake in 1979). Prior to this, Ford had used the name 'Courier' on its 1952-1960 sedan deliveryvariants of Ford's US mainstream passenger vehicles.Ford imported the new Couriers for the 1972 model year. Like the other minipickups of the time, it featured a sub-2-liter, four-cylinder engine, a four-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, an impressive load capability of 1,400 lb (635 kg) considering its size, and a fairly small price tag compared to full-sized pickups of the time. To circumvent the 25% "chicken tax" on light trucks, Couriers (as with Chevrolet LUVs) were imported in "cab chassis" configurations, which included the entire light truck - less the cargo box or truck bed - and were only subject to a 4% tariff. Subsequently, a truck bed was attached to the chassis and the vehicle could be sold as a light truck. The body styling was effectively that of the related Mazda B-series; however, its front styling was unique in that the grille was designed to emulate the larger Ford F-series, and large single headlights instead of the B-series' smaller twin units.
Cosmetically this truck is in decent shape. The body is straight and the paint is original. The climate here in northern California is very mild and typically cars are preserved and free of climate related deterioration like rust. However the air on the coast is moist and salty and typically coastal cars can see some rust. This Ford does have little spots of rust visible in the pictures simply from from the moist salty air of the coast. It is not rusted underneath like a vehicle from a place where they salt the roads and the spots can be patched relativelyeasy. Otherwise the paint and body are in great original shape. Like I said before the underside is solid and in good shape.
The interior is in great shape. The original seat and door panels have no rips or tears and very clean. The dash has no cracks and everything works. The headlineris also in great shape.
Mechanically this truck is in good working order. It starts and runs great and shifts into all 4 gears and reverse without problems. There are no leaks and all of the lights work. The engine bay is very clean and original a testament to how little this truck was used.
