1940 FORD deluxe convertible postwar hot rod custom style
1940 Ford Other
Here is a nice 1940 Ford Deluxe convertible built to the late Forties hop up/custom style. This neat original Ford was modified about 25 years ago by hot rod historian Don Montgomery. The car was set up to be as it might have been in the late 1940s. The exterior has genuine steel Desoto bumpers, flipper hub caps with beauty rings and original type rear fender skirts with the correct lever clamping arms. The car is lowered using longer shackles and de-arched springs as it was often done back then. Ford 15" wheels have 6.70x15 whitewall tires on them. The '40 appears like a mild hopped up custom (street rod) of that post war period.
High performance was not forgotten. The Mercury flathead engine (239" + .030" bore)has added speed equipment, including a 1936 McCulloch supercharger, Edelbrock heads, a Potvin cam and Fenton headers. A Stromberg 48 carburetor delivers the fuel and the spark comes from a Harman & Collins dual coil ignition with 2 DSM Mallory coils. Douglass steel pack mufflers (1950) provide a smooth exhaust note.
The car is in good condition. The paint, rebuilt engine and top were done over 30 years ago.The car isnot "concours" perfect. There is some "wear",butthe car isreally very nice. The body is good and solidas this is a California car. All the stock trim is still in place. The mechanical things - brakes, shocks, kingpins, radiator, axle bearings, steering and etc. wereall gone throughafter the car was purchased. The 244" engine runs well. The vacuum operated top works properly. The hop up modifications were done in the early 1990s. We have driven this car less than 4000 miles over the yearsas we have other carsthat we use more often. One item to note is that the rear main seal drips as so many flathead engines do.
We have displayed this car a little and find that the blower is a great conversation item. Many guys have never seen this centrifugal supercharger that wasmanufactured by Robert McCulloch (builder of Lake Havasu City) for the prewar Ford flathead engine. This is a great car for someone whois interested inthe1940s hot rod period.
This car is available in Fallbrook for viewing, which I recommend.
