Description:

1978 Ford Falcon panel van Mad Max Interceptor Australian XA XB XC

Wanted a Mad Max Interceptor but your budget had been holding you back? What about very unique shop truck?
Then look no further than this1978 Ford XC Falcon panel van. - Mad Max Interceptor project.
This model was unique to Australia, there are less than 5 of these currently in the entire USA and even rarer in most other countries.(Note this vehicle is currently in Australia, however, I have been exporting Aussie cars around the world for almost 20 years so I can arrange for it to be shipped to almost anywhere in the world, shipping will be at the buyer's expense).
Whilst this van requires some restoration work, it's overall a decent base to work with and a fraction of the cost of the more sort after XA XB XC Falcon hardtops, like the one used in Mad Max. I usually deal in those and this van was going to be my own workshop truck however with 3 Interceptors in the build for customers I don't have time or room for the van so I thought I would pass it on to someone who can finish and enjoy it.
As you can see in the pics, I am offering the vehicle with a couple of different style options.
Option 1)"Mad Max" inspired, with the correct nose cone, flares, roof wing (not pictured) along with a set of new Mad Max wheels (15x8/10"). This will also come with the rectangular headlights and grille needed to suit the nose cone.
or
Option 2) The more subtle but cool in its own right, factory front and no flares, etc. This is what the Buy it Now price is for. A deal can be sorted to suit your needs and budget though. Shoot me a message, I've been doing this for years and have never failed getting a deal together that satisfied my customers.
Van condition:
This was an inland country vehicle so whilst it does have some rust, overall it's actually quite good for its age and especially has these vans were very much unloved until the last 10 years or so. It's generally quite straight, with the only real panel damage being the front left guard (fender), repairable and I was going to use that one myself. The side windows have had covers made, only minor work required before final fitting and finishing. Likewise, there was a sunroof cut into the rear roof that I have plated over (screwed on currently) using a section of roof from another falcon so it has the correct shape.
Rust: Don't be scared, but I will list all the rust and as I have been exporting these cars for many years I like to make sure I don't sugar coat it and let you know exactly what I can see is there and some info about what panels are available to help with the restoration.
Sills (Rocker panels), these are very common to rust in this model, however, due to that fact, there are reproduction sills available (US$450 per side, they are complete from end to end and right the way to the factory joins so replacement is not a hard task). There is some rust in the lower door apertures as well but this would be easily repaired during the sill replacement.
Front floor pans, again a common rust spot and there are a pair of repair panels included WITH the sale. I believe both of these will fix all the rust in the floor in two easy repairs. The rest looks quite clean from both inside and under the van.
Lower front guard (fenders), just the external skin (both sides are available as new repair sections)
Passenger windscreen A pillar - an original replacement is included.
Some minor patches around the door window seals
A couple of small patches along the plenum lip, the plenum of these falcons were notorious for rusting out but this van is really quite good, I was very impressed when I took the guards off. Drivers side has some minor rust in the area under the guard but really very good for an X series Falcon.
There is an internal ledge in the back of the van, that runs the length of the van body, there is some flakey rust along there but pretty minor. I could wire wheel it and blow some paint over it and you would barely see it, but I'd rather leave everything honest and exposed.
Roof gutters are very good, however, it had roof racks in the past and where they were clamped on had damaged the gutter channel and they have been trimmed back to repair. There is one patch of rust on the inner frame, drivers side, approx 6" long that will need a small section folded up, hard to explain, but there is a pic. This was previously taped over and hard to see, but I have exposed it and got a decent pic to show what work is required.
Bonnet (hood) has some rust in the leading edge, a good standard bonnet is included with the van to assist with the repair (though if running the Mad Max front I would just trim the bonnet back and shape a new edge to match the nose cone neat.
Doors are good, just a small hole in the passenger door skin and the drivers' side has a couple of tiny holes near the handle which appear someone may have drilled a hole in the door and welded it up, as there is no reason for rust to form there.
Rear barn doors have a few bumps and bruises but other than some minor rust at the top of the left door.
Overall that should be the bulk of the rust repairs needed. It is a 40 year old vehicle so there will be various areas that need restoration but I think I have covered the vast majority of it in detail.
Interior:Carpet in the front was replaced, seats are tilt forward buckets mounted to original tracks and bolted through the factory holes. There is also a factory bench seat included with the van, it's currently loaded in the rear of the van. The dash is all original and overall in good condition, some minor fading of the silver lines that surround the cluster but nothing broken or missing. There is also a replacement glove compartment door included as the existing one has a damaged hinge. Sports steering wheel and original door trims (painted black and would suit restoring). Dash top has some cracks as these are near impossible to find uncracked, I have also included a carpeted dashboard cover. Seatbelts are original and in good usable condition (I can supply new belts for an additional US$200).
Running gear:Factory 6 cyl, in good running order, fuel is a little stale but it starts easy, idles and drives well. Manual gearbox feels good, clutch feels fine and shifts well. Diff appears fine as well, I have only driven it short distances near my house but nothing that would indicate any problems with the rear end, they generally last forever in these anyway. Exhaust has some holes and will need replacing. Conversion to V8 is very easy, these Falcons were optional with a Cleveland V8 from the factory and the bodies are essentially all the same. Windsor could also be fitted and 4.6/5.4L mod motors can also be fitted with some mods.
Suspension / Steering / brakes:
Mostly original and unrestored but feels ok, I would expect a few joins and bushes would need replacing to make it safe and reliable but everything is there and in working order. Brakes are original and in working order. The pedal is a bit spongy so suspect they need bleeding, however, the van had been sitting on a farm for years prior to me getting it and there was still fluid in the system so I don't expect there to be any broken lines or blown seals etc. As with any 40+ year old vehicle, it would be recommended to recondition the brakes before regular driving.
Optional items:
Wheels:The base price of this listing includes 4x standard wheels, however, I have a few options.1) Mad Max wheels - US$650 (inc chrome centre caps)2) Black 20" wheels - US$500 as pictured (not these require adapters to correct the offset, they are fitted to the front in these pics, but not the rear, so with the spacers, they would fill out the wheel arch better)3) Gold centre, polish lip 18" 5 spoke with nearly new tyres - US$650
Bodykit:Mad Max nose cone, 4x flares and bobtail roof wing (not pictured) - US$1800
Suspension / Steering kit:Full suspension and steering bush and joint kit: US$650
Additional items can be sourced and supplied upon request.
Shipping:The van is currently located in Australia, I have sold and exported dozens of these XA XB XC Falcons all over the world, US, Canada, UK, Belgium, Switzerland, etc. I can make all arrangements from this end. All shipping costs are paid directly to the freight broker, I do not mark up the shipping. You pay the same as I would. Shipping quotes are provided before shipping. You are also very welcome to arrange your own shipping if you wish. Sale price includes delivery of the vehicle to the container depot in my city (Newcastle NSW, Australia).
The cost will vary depending on where you live.
US approx US$6kCanada approx US$6k (as we have a spare spot in a container going to Toronto soon).
Other countries please contact me. We have 2 cars going to the UK shortly and could split container space to reduce costs.
Note: Whilst fairly obvious, I should mention the last 2 photos are examples of how this van could look finished with the body kit. The Interceptor van with the mural on the side is a photoshopped image, to date no one has ever built a Black Interceptor van with the correct nose and flares. This image shows the style of roof wing that would be included if you opted for the body kit as well.
ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE, I have approx 70-80 pics that I'm happy to share and can take more upon request. I have been exporting cars to customers overseas for many years and never had an issue, my vehicles are as described and great value.
