Description:

1971 Ford Mustang Convertible

This is auction for a nice 1971 Mustang. A well documented "1 of 2 cars produced" in this combination of options. It has verified 64K original miles on it and was purchased from the 2nd owner who had it from early 1972 thru Oct 2016 when I purchased it. It is an amazing example of a 1971 Mustang and has a remarkably clear history. I bought it from a sweet little ol' granny from Oklahoma. Yes, I actually said it because it's the truth. Beverly bought it early 1972 and cared for it until I bought it in Oct 2016. The history on this car is VERY easy and completely available. She loved to talk about it and provided details and answered any and all questions I had prior to purchase. The history and condition of the car was clear enough for me to buy it sight unseen and bring it to California to bring it back to life. She used to drive the Iowa?state senator " Ray Taylor " up & down the main drag during holiday parades, and then parked it in the barn in 2007. Her son did a good job in helping prep it for long term storage though they didn't think it would be this long. I bought it and had it trailered back to southern California to give it a once over before trying to fire it back up. It got a full tune up and was " reborn" with :
1) an oil change/filter change 2) complete new fuel system including : A) Fuel tank and soft lines B) stainless steel hard lines C) fuel pump D) fuel filter E ) original D1ZF carb was rebuilt and this car fires right up at the flick of the key and idles BUTTER smooth even in December. 3) Ignition : A) New Battery and cables B) distributor C) points D) condenser E ) Autolite cap/rotor F) Autolite plugs and wires G) New Autolite original starter solenoid H)New Autolite original voltage regulator I) Alternator 4) Brakes : A) new master cylinder B) Bled brakes all the way around 5) new Autolite radiator hoses
This is what was done prior to even firing the car up, and as soon as I flicked the key, it fired right up, idled smooth and went into " low idle " once warmed up. The car is very quiet and starts, runs, steers and stops as it should. The mechanical function of the top is butter smooth, and the actual top was replaced in 2007? right before she parked it. The top was replaced because it had a small undetected hole in it over the passenger side front which explains the replaced ( poorly replaced in my opinion ) passenger floor pan. Carpet was also replaced at that point. The hydraulic lines for the top were leaking at the cylinders when I looked at them, and it was just easier to replace the cylinders as long as they were undone to address the lines. So all that is new. The pump is strong and moves the top right up and down with a flick of the factory switch. The rear interior plastic trim panels were baked as were the plastic seat backs. I found some really nice ( unbaked ) originals on Ebay. Seat backs arrived just waiting on the rear trim panels to get here.I noticed signs the front clip was replaced. It is all Ford sheet metal with date codes but had a few dabs of paint ( primer ) different than the Bronze paint it has. Beverly stated she had never wrecked it and the title is clear not salvage so ?? The car looks to have had 1 repaint some time ago. The pictures are how it presents. It does shine after a simple wash. I did not detail or buff, no camera tricks, that is how it looks. It is a very nice driver car not a concours show car. Paint shines but is weak and due for a paint job. No visible signs of rust, no major dents. Has a few scratches and minor dings but you have to look close. After I ran it and checked everything out, I have NO problem driving this car up and down the coast and all over L.A. freeways. I have confidence in its dependability. Other than the items mentioned I see a very high degree of Ford originality all over this car. No holes chopped here and there, no holes drilled, no " GT " steering wheel or Edelbrock stuff, just a good old solid example of original American muscle. Ford iron at its best. The 351 cu.in. V8 Cleveland engine runs smooth and strong with no smoking and the C6 3 speed auto hold up well. Power assist steering and brakes function normal. I drove on existing tires but they are getting a little old. You may prefer new tires or as is ??All the glass is in good shape, no cracks/chips. Windows roll up & down easily and smoothly. Dash, turn signals, lights all work. Gotta say, It is just fun to drop the top on this one, and slow roll down PCH on a Sunday morning for coffee. Puts all the " car guys" sideways when the start looking at it. I drove it a mile or so up the street to Trumps club/golf course for brunch with the Mrs. and the car fit right in just fine. The old timers came over and " ooooh'd & aaaaahhh'd which was cool.
MARTI REPORT : I bought this with the intent of doing a custom on it. After I got a " Marti report " I.D.ing it a an ULTRA RARE 1 of 2 identical cars produced, I can n ot in good conscience alter or customize it. I will pass it along and find a different car.
So to be clear, this is an auction for a 1971 Mustang convertible. 351 V8 with C6 auto transmission. Power top, power steering, power brakes. White top, white interior. Tan ( Saddle Bronze ) paint & carpet. It is a nice solid original car not a restored or concours show car. Everything works, everything is near 50 years old.Other than the items mentioned, I found the car to be a excellent example of a highly original car.PLEASE - ask questions. Ask A LOT of questions.
