1968 Shelby GT500KR

VIN: 8T03R206114-03023

Miles: 53,852

Overview:

The "King of the Road" was built during the last 3 months of Shelby production in 1968. The "KR" moniker was used by Carroll Shelby when he heard that GM was planning to introduce a 396 Camaro called "King of the Road”; fortunately, Shelby beat them to the punch. The GT500KR features the 428 Cobra Jet motor which produced nearly 400HP, but for insurance reasons, Ford advertised it at 335HP.

The engine featured low riser 427 heads with huge rectangular ports, a special dual plane intake manifold (which holds the mammoth Holley Carburetor) with stronger connecting rods and crankshaft. The GT500KR also includes heavy duty front & rear shocks, power front disc brakes, power steering, big capacity rear drum brakes, and a larger exhaust system with dual rolled tip exhaust tips. This example with the four-speed manual (Hurst) gearbox features staggered rear shocks as well.

Car History:

This car was first delivered on June 24, 1968 to a customer of Sud Automobile Inc. of Longueil, Quebec in Canada. The owner kept the car until 1989 and sold it to a Gentleman in Swanton, Vermont. The second owner restored it to its current condition with a complete ground up restoration in 1990. When the car was restored, the color was changed from the original Lime Gold Metallic to Red. The seats and most of the interior are original, and a Hurst shifter was installed (I do have the original shifter). The third owner purchased the car in April 2000 and moved the car to Oregon. As the fourth owner of the car, I purchased it in 2003 and brought it to the San Francisco Bay Area. Over the last 15 years I have serviced the car regularly and made sure car was free of leaks and ready to run, even finding the authentic Shelby Hubcaps which the car originally came with.

The Car:

This car is a head turner, period. Although she doesn't wear her original color, she stands out in her Red paint. The condition of this car is great, probably an 8.5 out 10. The car has 53,852 miles on it. The power top works without any issues, she starts up immediately, the sequential tail lamps work impeccably, and all the electrical works without any demons. Like most cars from this era, she is missing the down pipe, but those are readily available to purchase online. My plan for this car was to perform another frame-off restoration and return her to the original Lime Gold with the hubcaps, just as she came out of factory nearly 50 years ago, but I guess that's for the next owner to do. This car is a driver, and a great driver at that! The car has a clear California Title and is ready for her next owner to pamper her and take her out for long drives! This is a great opportunity to own one of the rarest Mustangs out there!

Price:

This car is being offered at $195,000.00 (firm).

Along with the car, you'll also get the original shifter and the 4 Shelby Hubcaps. The condition of sale offers no warranty and the car comes in "As Is, Where Is" basis. Trucking can be arranged at the Buyer's expense and Pick-Up is available. The car is currently in San Francisco.
