THE NEMESIS

Enthusiasts who follow the crowd usually end up with a cookie-cutter ride that only stands out on the freeway when blended in with a sea of late-model stockers. Certain trucks have gained popularity as the brands and body styles to build. Chevy and Ford have enjoyed the majority of the custom spotlight, and the classic Ford '53-'56 F-100 is an old-school hauler many enthusiasts have used as the basis for their low-slung, smoothed, and rpm-turning desires. While these trucks are certainly popular and plentiful, the ingredients most builders use to craft them never really seems to change. Typically a '56 F-100 big-window is the truck of choice, and when it comes to color selection, most people seem to select red, black, or yellow-and they always stuff a 350ci small-block Chevy between the 'rails. Originality, when it comes to creating a unique Effie, has certainly gone by the wayside.

Rick Federmeyer of Anacortes, Washington, decided to build an extraordinary truck and to set a whole new level of custom style and refinement for the F-100. The result of his out-of-the-box thinking is the "Nemesis”. As a street-rod designer and builder, Rick is not shy when it comes to reshaping and redefining his metal and tossing on his custom signature. Of course, having the skilled metal and paint hand of Chris Odom from Extreme Metal & Paint by his side didn't hurt. When it came time to tear into the F-100, going crazy with the stance and looks was the only custom road Rick was interested in traveling down.

Once the cab, bed, and front-end were hoisted from the chassis, Rick locked the door to his shop and went full-throttle, crafting a fresh skeleton for the F-100 skin to hang on. New frame-rails were crafted using 2x4-inch and 2x3-inch boxed mild steel, and the tail end was shortened 6-inches to accommodate the new F-150 bed. A custom Mustang II-style front-end complete with Heidt's upper and lower control arms and Heidt's 2-inch drop spindles combined with Lincoln Rolling Lobe airbags to hammer the nose down hard for the ultimate cruising altitude and attitude. The rear frame-rails were treated to a deep C-notch and an '87 Mustang rear-end with a four-link and Lincoln Rolling Lobe airbags. Custom lower control arms, air spring perches, iron cross sway-bar mounts and polished hard lines for the air suspension further accent the chassis. (Note: Most of the pictures of the truck were taken in the driving position, not slammed. When viewing the picture set after this text scroll down to the pictures of the graphics inset in the bed, the last picture is the Iron Cross and then a picture of the Nemesis badge, the very next two pictures are the truck in the UP position for going over driveways, etc) Rick's buddy Aaron Starkovich installed the custom air suspension, and the pavement-grinding stance was topped off with 18x9-inch front and 18x9.5-inch rear Centerline Sahara wheels strapped in Ventus P245/ 40 ZR18 front and P265/35ZR18 rear street shoes. After the chassis was styled and dialed, the time came to decide on a powerplant.

To push all of Nemesis' smooth style down the highway, Rick located a Ford 5.0L mill and rear-end. A Ford in a Ford is a rare thing these days, and Rick decided that sticking Bow Tie power under the massaged hood of Nemesis would be a cardinal sin. A pair of GT-40 heads holds Ford Racing valves, valve springs, and roller lifters, while a Trick Flow camshaft produces the requisite rumble.

A custom exhaust system fabricated by Rick feeds cycled fuel through a Flowmaster muffler. Throttle and gear commands are delivered to the rear differential through a Ford C-4 transmission fitted with a B&M shift kit and a Hole Shot torque converter. The Mustang rearend holds 2.73:1 gears and is sealed with a polished aluminum differential cover and capped on both ends with disc brakes.

An Optima battery sends juice to a Mallory distributor, and Taylor wires successfully light all the candles. Before being dropped between the modified framerails, the Mustang mill was dressed with polished valve covers wearing the Nemesis script and topped with a chrome air cleaner and surrounded by color-matched components and accessories.

When it came time to alter the exterior attitude, Rick was prepared to go big-and go big he did. Starting with the cab, Rick and Chris Odom chopped the top 5 inches at the windshield and 4 inches at the rear window. The factory rear glass was retained to throw onlookers off. To accent the extra-low stance, the body was sectioned 4 inches, reducing the extra meat around the waistline, creating a tighter and more physically fit custom package.

Up front, the hood was pancaked 5 inches to match the lowered roofline and converted to a forward-opening unit to ease with wrench sessions. Entering and exiting the modified cab is now done through suicide doors. The front end of Nemesis is easier on the eyes with a deleted front bumper and a smoothed roll pan filled with frenched Sylvania H4 driving lights. The factory grille was slightly modified and graced with amber running lights. To further accent the smooth envelope, the door handles and hood badges were shaved off. The real body-massaging magic lies out back with the joining of the late-model Ford F-150 Supercrew bed with the classic F-100 fenders. Rick and Chris had to fabricate completely new bedsides using the original F-100 fenders as a template to build molded glass versions to blend seamlessly into the side panels. A custom steel roll pan was built to take place of the Supercrew rear bumper, and the exhaust was ported through the passenger-side bedside. A frenched antenna was grafted into the cab behind the passenger door for a '60s feel. All of this smoothed metal art, executed by Rick and Chris, was topped with PPG Jewel Frost paint down below and was followed by Timberline Green Pearl up top. Chris laid down the sensational paint scheme, while Mike Lavalle from Killer Paint mapped out and tossed on the iron cross graphics gracing the beltline region. The paint detail does not stop on the bed, cab, and front clip; the two-tone treatment flows through the doorjambs, into the smoothed inner bed walls, and through the detailed engine compartment. People - this is stuff of Magic.

Photographing a car like this is a task, because the Pearl in the green paint is flipping and flopping in the sunlight like a dolphin in waves. Just a slight variation in the way the sun is hitting the green makes it go from a dark hue to a very vibrant color. I took pictures during the highest sun point in the day and late in the day, but way before dusk to try and give the viewer an idea of just how different it can look. On a cloudy day the green can almost look black. In a building with lights it is more of a dark color.

Between the doors sits an '89 Silverado bench seat dressed with soft-touch leather and light-green and tan suede. The original F-100 dash was wildly modified to represent a more modern flavoring, and the graphic treatment was carried onto it to finish things off. The steering column was topped with a LeCarra steering wheel and a small center console was built to house the shifter, a few assorted gauges (airbag gauge), and the Pioneer head unit. The audio system consists of a Bazooka subwoofer tube, Rockford Fosgate amplifiers, and Boston Acoustic mids and separates mounted in the kick panels.

Rick Federmeyer built one of the wildest classic F-100s that I have ever seen. He built the truck in honor of his brother Michael who passed away in '99 and was the truck's previous owner.

Since its completion in 2004, Nemesis has been pulling in prestigious hardware at all the shows Rick took it to and actually appeared on The Learning Channel's Show Rides.

The overall condition of "Nemisis" today is almost exactly how it was in 2004 as a Show Truck. It has been driven only occasionally in its home in Southern California. It is housed in an underground private collection where it is attended to weekly with other unique automobiles in my friends personal collection.

The car runs and drives perfectly and has been maintained by one of Southern California's premier shops in San Clemente, CA.

The car needs nothing and is ready to go to a new home.
