1966 Ford Mustang 2+2
Early Mustang fastbacks like this 1966 2+2 remain a bit of an anomaly often pulling larger prices than their drop-top siblings. Is it the fantastic look? The practicality? The relative rarity? Whatever the reason there are a lot of things to like about this dark blue fastback. What this Mustang offers is a classic high-performance look that doesn't go overboard while maintaining that pony spirit that people have admired from day one. The dark blue paint is sophisticated and attractive and not too different from say Nightmist Blue. Finish quality is decent all around making this a car you'll look forward to driving and one that will make you proud to pull into a favorite cruise night or car show. A small hood scoop and hood pins add a bit of competition styling that fits right on this quick little pony and it's refreshingly free of stripes and other decals. Instead the clean shape speaks for itself. Bright chrome bumpers a few well-placed emblems and correct polished trim all give it a detailed look that is extremely attractive. The attractive black interior was restored a few years ago and now has that appealing lived-in look that all Mustangs should have. The seat covers door panels and carpets were all replaced and still show well with heavy-duty floor mats to keep things tidy. An aftermarket tilt steering column is actually a very welcome addition to any early Mustang and the fat steering wheel has a vintage look that's a lot easier to grab. The gauges are quite possibly original and in good order with auxiliary instruments under the dash in the usual location keeping an eye on the venerable 289 under the hood. That's an original AM radio still in the dash although it's not currently functional and probably due for an upgrade if you want to crank out some tunes during a leisurely drive. We also love the practicality of the fastback with a fold-down rear seat that expands trunk space exponentially. And speaking of the trunk it's nicely finished using what appears to be spray-on bedliner material that'll probably last forever. No early Mustang feels right with anything but a 289 under the hood. Quick to rev yet surprisingly torquey it makes this fastback feel quick without working too hard. Ford Blue engine paint chrome valve covers and bright red plug wires make for an attractive engine bay that still captures the 1960s. An open-element air cleaner wears a reproduction decal and we love seeing an upgraded power steering rack on an early Mustang which makes for a very pleasant driving experience. An Edelbrock Performer intake manifold and a Holley 4-barrel are a proven combination that was perfected decades ago and long-tube headers with performance mufflers give it an awesome exhaust note. The C4 3-speed automatic transmission shifts well and doesn't dilute the performance feel and according to the door tag it's got 3.00 gears out back so highway cruising is a pleasure. 17-inch American Racing Torque Thrusts wrapped in 225/45/17 radials set a wicked stance that turns heads everywhere this fastback goes.Fastback Mustangs never stick around for very long and if you want an affordable one that you can drive and show this is the one.
