This one, a Phaeton, was built back in the 1980s in the then-popular "resto rod" style by famed drag racer "Kansas" John Wiebe and spent the last couple of decades in a Granada Hills, Calif. car museum. The Deuce also did time on various Hollywood movie sets and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Currently showing 22,009 (actual) miles on the odometer, the '32 runs and drives flawlessly. Up front, it proudly displays the iconic Deuce grille, topped by the leaping greyhound mascot -- in this case, the shell is an authentic, Henry Ford-manufactured item. We've just had the radiator refurbished and the car runs cool at all times. Check out the cool, dropped headlight bar with V8 emblem, the desirable, gennie headlights, and the deluxe chrome front bumper.
Built on a genuine 1932 Ford frame -- not a reproduction -- the Deuce is titled as a 1932 Ford. No DMV hassles here!
Our Deuce still is registered to these very valuable, original 1932 "year of manufacture" California license plates. Note blue dot taillight, another one of the many nice touches on the car.
Cosmetically, the Phaeton presents fabulously. The original Rootlieb 'glass body is known as perhaps the best in the hot rod industry, and it remains in beautiful condition. There is no significant damage to the rootbeer metallic finish to be noted, no paint bubbling or cracking, no scratches or scrapes.
a 5-liter Pontiac small block motor backed by a TH350 auto tranny, the Deuce is plenty fast.
Installation is very clean and tidy, and all service items are easily accessible. Note interesting, gear-driven steering assist unit from Steer Clear Wizard on firewall.
Deuce's cockpit is fully furnished with a set of Stewart-Warner gauges; except fo the clock, they're all in perfect working order. Even the Realistic cassette radio works!
Classy pinstriping by the legendary Tom "Itchy" Otis!
Front and rear seats feature carefully tufted hyde of the nauga upholstery. Apart from a few feline claw marks, the interior is in fine condition throughout and quite spacious.
The infamous rear bench, as comfy as a Rolls Royce's. Westwind Drive-In, here we come! Deuce features a 2-inch windshield chop, comes with full weather equipment including working windshield wipers (note dual chromed wiper motors), a perfect convertible top featuring a gennie frame, a tonneau and even a set of side curtains.
Rear-mounted, matching chrome-spoked spare. Glass rear window with chrome frame.
Attractive Roar with Gilmore center cap.
Spotless undercarriage shows off lots of true hot rod details and craftsmanship, with a combination of stock 1932 and modern components -- such as hydraulic brakes, open driveline, and tube shocks -- favored by true aficionados. Note the fully chromed front suspension with added disc brakes. The rust free, gennie Deuce frame was boxed and strengthened and received a durable coat of orange powder-paint. There's absolutely no corrosion to be found on this California Hot Rod!
Friday, September 1st, was a great day to cruise aruond Ventura in the Deuce, as Ventura Nationals participants started to arrive. Needless to say, it was "thumbs up" all the way for our fine vintage Ford!
Be it on the open highway or around town, the Phaeton is utterly comfortable in all traffic situations. In fact, the spacious Phaeton body is very popular with folks who love to actually DRIVE their hot rods instead of just sitting next to them in their little folding lawn chairs at car shows.
This Deuce looks, rides, and sounds just right. It needs nothing but a stretch of open road and an appreciative pilot. Judging by all the favorable comments we've received, there's a whole bunch of coolness in driving a true Eighties rod. We think the Phaeton is way cooler than any rat rod.
Returning home, we're very happy with the Deuce's performance.
Everybody knows that building your own Rod can and will be majorly expensive. In fact, including outside labor at shop rates ranging from $50 to $125 per hour, most new builds demand upward of $100,000.00 -- and, most likely, many headaches -- to complete. Here's a beautiful Deuce that can be had for just pennies on the Dollar. It's ready to be enjoyed, right now, painlessly. Cruising the Phaeton will put a smile on the face of even the most jaded hot rodder!
