1971 Ford Mustang Convertible 302 V8 - Travelled 13k miles around the US
1971 Ford Mustang
Very sad sale of my 1971 Ford Mustang Convertible.
302 V8 3 speed manual
In lovely metallic blue with white roof
What makes this car so special is that it recently did a 13k mile trip around the USA with not a single breakdown! We started in New York and went to Niagara Falls then travelled across to San Francisco, then to Lake Tahoe, then back to Santa Cruz and down highway 1 along the coast to Los Angeles. From there we went to the Grand Canyon, AZ to New Mexico to Texas to New Orleans to Mississippi to Florida all the way down and out to Key West. Then from there we went up to Savannah, Charleston, Washington DC, Philadelphia and finally back to NY!
The only issues we had were a tire blow out at the very start of the trip due to old tires at which point we had all 4 tires replaced with brand new ones.
This car is not a concourse example, but it is very honest and reliable! I would happily drive this anywhere in the country! It could do another round the country trip tomorrow.
The car had been restored 15 years ago by the previous owner and garaged since. After I purchased it and before the trip to make sure it was reliable we replaced & uprated the following:
Front brakes changed from drums to rotor brakes (this makes the biggest difference, the car can be driven like a modern car and brakes like a modern car too)
New brake servo fitted (which is an upgrade kit as this model never came with one)
New rear drums, shoes, wheel cylinders & fittings on the rear brakes (with the drums upgraded to the 1/2" wider versions)
New anti roll bar bushes
New top shock mount bushes
New rear uprated springs & shackles
Uprated pertronix electronic ignition to replace the points contacts
New sump pan gasket
New rear main oil seal gasket, now neoprene not rope!
New valve cover gasket
New uprated 351 boss clutch, 3/4" larger diameter
New alternator
New alternator voltage controller (this is a solid state uprated modification)
New valley gaskets
New roller bushes for the clutch pedal & brake pedal bushes (these pedal bushes are a common problem on these mustangs & it completely transformed the clutch operation on the car)
We also did lots of other jobs on the car such as, a major amount of tidying the wiring, that are often problems on these cars! We checked and tightened just about everything on the car and soon before we bought the car it had had a new battery and starter motor fitted by the old owner.
It has had a full service with spark plugs, rotor arm, distributor cap and plug wires. Also just had a oil change and new air filter after we got back as well as an oil change before we set off.
Like I said it is fantastic runner and reliable but it is not perfect, there is slight damage on the passenger lower door. Overall the body is very good. The power top goes up and down just as it should but the cover and metal frame is not perfect . The interior is mostly very good but the door cards could do with repainting as some paint is flaking off and it has a tear in the rear seat and a small tear in the drivers front seat. Mechanically the car is perfect and it drives fantastically. It's such a great car and I am very sad to sell it, but unfortunately I cannot keep it. It will take the buyer anywhere and could easily be used every day.
I have hundreds of pictures of the work we did and of the trip for anyone to see. Please contact on 212 361-9850.
