1965 Ford Mustang GT 350 RestoMod

1965 Mustang Convertible Restoration Modification around a one-off 1966-style Shelby GT-350 RestoMod
Mustang was stripped down to a bare shell about 10 years ago. Though there was NO significant body or frame rust to begin with, all surfaces were prepared and sealed with POR-15 before shipping out for paint. The rolling shell was sent to Seattle legend Staten Medsker for custom body mods, assembly and paintwork (Try Googling Staten – you’ll see he worked for George Barris in his SoCal glory days back in the 1960’s building the original TV batmobile, the Monkees roadster, many other classics and some stunning customs). No expense was spared to do what the Ford factory could (and should) have done when turning out these original Pony cars!
The Shelby side scoops aren’t the usual ill-fitting bolt-on type found on most other tributes (and even the factory cars) but are fully integrated into the body itself. Same goes for the front and rear valances; those ugly gaps you’ll see on other Mustangs aren’t there because neither is a bolt-on! Custom fender flares and integrated Shelby rear spoiler is into the trunk lid. Many, many costly hours were spent making this ride absolutely fantastic. All new body seals, rubber gaskets, chassis wiring, a new complete 1966 Pony interior, a Shelby GT steering wheel and new electric white vinyl top from “Convertibles Only” were installed (They later featured this GT350 on the cover of their sales brochures). A great suspension makes driving a Mustang so much more fun! New rear leaf springs were added along with KYB gas shocks on all four corners. Stainless Steel Brake Corp. slotted rotors and calipers now make stopping safe and quick! New front-to-back subframe connectors were also welded in place giving necessary stiffness and support to the convertible’s frame.
While the externals were being done, the drivetrain was also addressed. Automotive Machine Specialists in Bellevue, WA did the engine build starting with a strong, acid-dipped 302 truck block. New HiPo rods & pistons with Hastings rings were used along with a new gear-driven, high profile Edelbrock cam. EVERYTHING has been balanced and blueprinted. The Trick Flow high compression aluminum heads are topped with a dual plane Edelbrock performer RPM manifold and a Quick Fuel Street Performer carb meters the gas coming from an electric fuel pump system
MSD ignition systems (with Accel wires) with “Blaster III” coil as well. A custom aluminum “Be Cool” radiator with electric fan solves the always pervasive Mustang overheating issue perfectly and adds extra HP by not needing a fan belt. Rev this motor up and you KNOW it was built to last!
One turn of the key and the strong hipo 302 V8 fires right up with just a few pumps of the gas pedal when cold. The T5 Transition operates smoothly, just like it should, with NO clutch binding or slippage. The car tracks well going down the road.
Both front buckets and the rear bench are soft and supple with no breakdown of the cushion material or seam splitting. New dash cover. Both door panels, arm rests, cranks and handles in & out were replaced. The power convertible top is in almost like-new condition and both opens & closes easily using the dash switch.
Great looking JME Performance gauges.A fair-weather weekend car with super low miles on the rebuilt engine.
Chrome bumper are in fantastic shape with no pitting or chrome wear. As my un-retouched photos show, the overall exterior is very good and the Ferrari red paint and white painted stripes hold a shine very well. This Mustang really has been a blast to drive and absolutely turns heads everywhere you go!
