1930 Ford Model-A Coupe 5-window Rumble Seat Coupe.
1930 Ford Model A
This 1930 Ford Model A (#A1876254) 5-window Rumble Seat Coupe.
This example has been in Connecticut for the majority of its life, with a handful of long-term owners along the way. An older full restoration included upgraded wheels, accessory hood louver vents, and period options such as a Motometer radiator cap, horn and rearview mirror clock. The car is a super reliable driver.
The car presents well in the two-tone mellow yellow and black seen here. The finish is very nice quality and retains a good shine overall, with some scuffs, cracks and other blemishes detailed in the photographs. The car is free of any rust or corrosion and is as solid underneath as it is up top.
The body panels are Ford steel. The doors fit and operate well, and accessory triple ventilation doors offer improved engine cooling over the original slatted louvers.
Wire wheels are upgraded items from a later Ford V8 and match the car’s red-orange pinstripe, wearing clean chrome caps and Bridgestone four-ply blackwalls. A matching rear-mounted spare is also present under a protective vinyl cover. The hinged windshield operates freely and its powered wiper is driven by an electric motor in lieu of its original vacuum actuation.
Chrome and other brightwork present really well, with the radiator shell and strip bumpers exhibiting a nice shine. An original accessory horn and Boyce Moto Meter radiator cap with temperature gauge are mounted up front, while the rear end wears a pair of blue-dot taillights. Rubber weatherstripping is showing its age in several areas, as is interior wind lacing.
Inside, the mohair-covered bench seat presents well with little wear and no visible damage. Matching stock-style door panels have tight map pockets. The headliner fits nicely and shows no obvious wear, while older carpeting is also very presentable.
All interior accessories are working as they should.
Simple instrumentation is housed in a smooth early-style bezel and includes a stock oval speedometer, fuel gauge, ammeter and panel light. Just over 18k miles are shown but we assume inaccurate, with no way of confirming the car’s actual mileage. A correct accessory rearview mirror with an integrated clock is installed above.
Out back, the rumble seat upholstery would likely have matched the interior fabric originally but is currently covered in inexpensive black vinyl which is showing its age. The correct steps are provided on the rear bumper bracket and fender for access.
The car is powered by its standard 201 cubic inch, 40-horsepower flathead four and three-speed, non-sychro manual gearbox which are thought to be original. A fuel shutoff petcock is retained and the oiling system has been converted to accept spin-on filters.
A modern alternator supplements simple fabric wiring and a stock armored ignition cable. A small amount of water drips during warm idle, but the car does not leave fluids on the ground while parked.
The motor is well-tuned, starting with the right combination of inputs and starting easily. We drive the car regularly including on a 15-mile trip in recent weeks, it has no outstanding mechanical issues.
From underneath, the frame and floors look clean having been restored as well and show no evidence of repairs or notable corrosion. A small collection of extra parts is included in the sale. Offered without reserve. Inspections encouraged and welcomed for the duration of the auction.
