THE 1957 THUNDERBIRD
An American automotive icon!
The T-Bird roadster was introduced at theDetroitAuto Show in 1954 in response to the Chevrolet Corvette. It was a two door roadster with a focus on modern comforts, conveniences and all weather protection, as well as power, performance and handling. In short, it was the essence of personal luxury. The introduction of the 1955 Thunderbird was a huge success, easily filling a market niche. Ford created a car that combined the flair of a sports car with the comfort of a boulevard cruiser! It was a “personal” two-seater car that was fast and handles better than traditional cars of its time. Later nicknamed the “baby bird”, the 1955-1957 T-Bird has been a collector car almost since its introduction, and is now an American icon! Many auto enthusiasts consider the baby birds to be one of the best looking cars ever made! Its timeless design is recognized worldwide.
More than 5,000 names were considered for the new Ford project in 1954. A young Ford car stylist, Alden "Gib" Giberson, won a $95 suit and an extra pair of pants fromSaks Fifth Avenuefor suggesting the name Thunderbird.
Thunderbird enjoys a storied history whose iconoclastic entry onto the scene in 1954 single-handedly erected the personal luxury-car segment in theUnited States. The Thunderbird two-seater was instantly popular with overtones of a high performance sports car, yet it had a strong appeal to luxury-minded buyers seeking refinements such as roll-up windows, a selection of power extras, and steel bodywork as opposed to the fiberglass used for the Corvette.
Production of the car designed by William P. Boyer (under the direction of Franklin Q. Hershey) began Sept. 9, 1954, at Ford’s Dearborn (Mich.) Assembly Plant and generated immediate excitement. Customer demand for Thunderbird resulted in its October public introduction which was nearly a full month ahead of schedule. Public orders totaled more than 3,500 within the first 10-day selling period, while planned volume for the model year was only 10,000 units. Ford sold a first year total of 16,155 Thunderbirds.
The 1955 model had a removable hardtop with a 102 inch wheelbase chassis that was 175.3 inches overall, with a width of 72 inches and a height of 52 inches. Curb weight was 2833 pounds. The engine was a Mercury 292 cubic inch V-8, exclusive to the Thunderbird line, which had 198 horsepower with the automatic and 193 horsepower with the manual transmission. The car sold for a base price of $2,695 and was available in five colors: Thunderbird Blue, Raven Black, Snowshoe White, Goldenrod Yellow, and Torch Red. All cars had vinyl upholstery matching the exterior paint color.
The 1956 T-Bird was changed only slightly from the 1955 model, most easily distinguished by the continental kit spare tire.
The 1957 version offered many improvements, including a restyled grille, stretched rear sheet metal which allowed for a larger trunk, fresh bumper designs and improved seating. Other less visible improvements included larger openings for improved cooling, revised spring rates, stiffer chassis cross-members, larger brakes, a 12-Volt electrical system and new 14 inch wheels. The suspension improvements provided the 1957 T-Bird with more stable handling.
The1957 was offered with four engine options. The “C” code was a 292 Cu In 2V 212 HP unit. The most common upgrade was the “D” code 312 Cu In 4V with 245 HP. There were two high performance options. The “E” code was a 312 Cu In Dual Quad with 270 HP. And the “F” code was a 312 Cu In Fuel Injected engine with 300 HP. Although the “F” code sells for big bucks, it had never made for a very good driver due to the constant tuning issues needed. Only about 40 “F” code 1957’s still exist today! The “E” code is considered to be the best driver of them all!
The Baby-Bird continued in production for only three years, with the 1957 Thunderbird the last year of the classic two-seaters. The last one rolled off the assembly line Dec. 13, 1957, bringing an end to an iconic era.

Vehicle Condition:
THIS ORIGINAL 1957 “E” CODE THUNDERBIRD IS IN AMAZING CONDITION. THIS VERY ATTRACTIVE VINTAGE AMERICAN SPORTS CAR RUNS AND DRIVES WONDERFULLY!
This Thunderbird is 59 years old, so some minor signs of age are to be expected! Let me first say that nearly everything appears to be in amazing restored as original condition. The entire interior has been restored to perfection. The radio is not currently working, not uncommon for a vehicle this age. No attempt has been made to have it repaired. The exterior is beautiful! The front chrome bumper looks brand new. The rear bumper looks great. The wire wheels are excellent. The paint is excellent. There are a few tiny touch-ups on the forward edge of the passenger side skirt. The weather strippingaround the skirts is good but not perfect. Everything under the hood, the interior, trunk and exterior appear to be correct stock components that had been amazingly well maintained prior to this vehicles restoration!
Note that the yellow California plates are not included with the car. The mileage shown above is the odometer reading and is not known to be the total miles for the vehicle.
This Thunderbird will turns heads and gets thumbs up virtually everywhere it goes!
