Description:

1971 Ford Mustang

Offered for sale is my 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 equipped with the highly desirable 429 Cobra Jet engine and four speed top loader transmission. I recently had the opportunity to purchase a Shelby and I'm selling this car for funds to put towards the Shelby. This is a highly optioned car which in addition to the Cobra Jet engine and four speed includes factory air conditioning functional ram air power steering and brakes power windows fold down rear seat AM radio with stereo 8 track tape tinted glass console Mach 1 sports interior group and instrumentation group with tachometer.

HISTORY

I purchased this Mach 1 from a dealer in December 2014 with the intention of keeping it long term however a Shelby convertible that I had been looking at became available so I need to part with the Mustang. The history of the car prior to my purchasing it is unknown. I've driven the car briefly and everything is in good working order. Since I have owned it it has always been garaged and covered. The odometer reads 69474. Unknown if this is the actual miles.

BODY AND INTERIOR

The car was recently repainted before I purchased it. The body appears laser straight to me and the paint has a deep wet sanded and buffed finish. The blacked out hood and lower body side are finished in the correct satin black finish. There is no rust in the car that I know of. All chrome and stainless trim is in excellent condition and the window glass is free of scratches. The interior is very nice and appears to be mostly original with no rips or tears. The door panels are free of splits and the seat upholstery is in excellent condition and a reconditioned rim blow steering wheel was recently installed. All lights and gauges are in good working order. The power windows are in good working order and operate smoothly. The radio does not have audio output but it seems to be in working order as you can hear the motor for the tape running when a cartridge is inserted. This is probably an issue with the speaker wiring that would need to be addressed.

ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN

The engine bay is very nicely detailed with correct hoses belts battery etc. All surfaces appear to have been freshly refinished in their correct colors with appropriate markings. The restrictive quadrajet carburetor was replaced with a Holley 4150 with manual choke. The quadrajet will go with the car in the trunk to the new owner. The air conditioning is in place on the car but needs to be charged with refrigerant. I do not have the tools or experience to perform this so the new owner would have to address that issue. The engine runs strong with no smoking or unusual noises. The top loader transmission operates and shifts smoothly and is equipped with the original Ford Hurst shifter. The car rides on Goodyear Polyglas tires mounted on 15" Magnum 500's.

UNDERCARRIAGE

The undercarriage is nicely detailed with red oxide primer on the floor pan surfaces and satin black or cast blast on other parts where appropriate. There is no undercoating to hide any rusty or damaged areas. The car has been fitted with a custom exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers mated to the original style chrome tips.

OBSERVATIONS

This is an opportunity to own a rare and highly collectible Cobra Jet Mach 1. This was the last year for the big block in the Mustang and this car is a beautiful and highly optioned example. With this color combination and long list of options this is truly a highly collectible Mustang that will increase in value.

On May-28-15 at 19:16:19 PDT seller added the following information:

I have a Marti report for the car showing it being a true J code 429 CJ car with the four speed trans.I could not upload it with the photos because it was not in jpeg format but I do have it along with the window sticker showing the engine and trans options paint color etc. I cannot verify if the drivetrain is numbers matching. The guy I bought the car from told me he thought it was not numbers matching. I think this was based on date codes he found on the block and transmission. I did not look for these to verify this information and do not have access to a lift at this time to look for them. The engine has an ID tag on the intake manifold showing a date of December 1970 which would be in the same date range as the car's production date however metal tags are easily changed and anything can happen over a period of 44 years.
