1976 Fiat X1/9 Project Build
1976 Fiat X-1/9
If you are seriously looking for a fun sports car...one that will catch lots of attention wherever you drive...and will not break the bank for sale is a 1976 Fiat X1/9 Project Build.
The Fiat X1/9 is a two-seater mid-engine sports car designed by Bertone and manufactured by Fiat from 1972-1982 and subsequently by Gruppo Bertone from 1982 to 1989. Reported numbers vary by source, but about two-thirds of the approximately 160,000 X1/9s produced were sold in the USA. Three generations of X1/9 were sold in the U.S.:1974 cars, 1975-1978 cars, and1979-1989 cars. There are not many left of these little known "Baby Ferrari's."
I bought the car from a guy out in California. It now has a clean Florida title. I later found, bought, and transported a 1981 donor Bertone X19 from Jacksonville, FL to our garage in Coral Springs, FL. We started painting and restoring this 1976 X1/9 but the project has stalled. The car was originally red. We started to paint it yellow. We have most of the parts necessary to complete the build. We have new floor pans, and started to deal with rust issues that were found. We have two rebuilt engines to choose from as well as the engine and transmission that came out of the Bertone X19. This one has fuel-injection.
I drive an X1/9 on a regular basis. They are phenomenal cars to drive. Due to the mid-engine design the handling is incredible. With a transverse engine and gearbox in a mid-mounted rear wheel drive configuration, the X1/9 is known for its balanced handling, retractable headlights, lightweight removable (Targa) roof which is stowed under the bonnet, front, and rear storage compartments and for being the first Fiat to have been designed from its conception to meet US safety regulations.
