Almost immediately, it was unofficially known as the "Daytona" in honor of Ferrari's podium sweep at the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, and it stands as the last front-engine, V-12 Ferrari GT model designed and announced before Fiat's takeover of Ferrari road-car production in 1969. It was also the last 12-cylinder Ferrari officially sold in the US until 1984. Continuing to utilize the chassis, wheelbase length, independent underpinnings, and rear transaxle of its predecessor, the 365 GTB/4 differed dramatically in its bold styling, penned by Pininfarina's Leonardo Fioravanti and rendered in steel and aluminium by Scaglietti. Power was delivered by an enlarged version of the basic 60* 275 GTB/4 V-12 engine, now displacing 4.4 liters and delivering 352 bhp at 7,500 rpm. While intended as a fast road car, the 365 GTB/4 remained competitive in motorsport long after most of its contemporaries retired. Between 1970 and 1979, 18 Daytonas contested their namesake 24-hour race, resulting in five Top-10 finishes and two second-place podiums, with the last including the 1979 GTO class win scored by John Morton and Tony Adamowicz. Class wins were scored at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1972, 1973, and 1974. The 365 GTB/4 was an important model for Ferrari, with marque experts citing 1,383 constructed in all. Numbered 15279 and finished in Fly Yellow over black leather upholstery, the livery it continues to display today, this original left-hand drive, US-specification 365 GTB/4 was completed on June 22, 1972, and then shipped to official Ferrari distributor Chinetti-Garthwaite Imports of Paoli, Pennsylvania. Its first recorded owner was Gary L. Almy, of Winnetka, Illinois, with the Daytona's purchase financed through the Alameda Coast Guard Federal Credit Union. In February 1977, the Daytona was sold to Harley Cluxton, the former NART Ferrari driver, Mirage endurance-racing team owner, and principal of Grand Touring Cars in Scottsdale, Arizona. When the Arizona title to 15279 was issued to Grand Touring Cars in March 1977, 11,344 miles were documented, and in January 1978, Grand Touring Cars sold 15279 to John P. Annis, president of Agency Data Systems and a resident of Tampa, Florida. James M. Pyle of Wauchula, Florida, acquired 15279 in 1985, and in 1996, it was advertised for sale by Ron Spangler's Prancing Horse Farm in Bel Air, Maryland, described as a "1972 USA model, Fly Yellow, 25,000 miles, air-conditioning, very proper car." During autumn 1997, 15279 was offered for sale by Algar Ferrari of Philadelphia, and in 2001, it was shown at the Reading, Pennsylvania, Concours d'Elegance and earned FCA Platinum. During 2002 and at just an approximate 35,000 miles' use, 15279 was sold to Emilio and Patricia Garcia of Florida, who commissioned Ferrari marque specialist Greg S. Jones of Stuart, Florida, to perform an extensive ground-up restoration to meticulous concours-level standards, including upholstery provided by Tappezzeria Luppi of Modena, Italy. Following completion in 2008, the Daytona was shown in Ferrari Club of America events by the Garcias to great effect, winning three more FCA Platinum awards at the Palm Beach Cavallino Classic in 2009, 2010, and 2012, respectively. The 365 GTB/4 Daytona was also displayed in 2012 at the Amelia Island Concorso Atlantico and at the Concours-on-the-Avenue in Carmel, California. During December 2012, 15279 received Ferrari Classiche certification in recognition of its stunning authenticity and correctness. Approximately 44,500 original miles have been accumulated from new. Riding on Borrani wire-spoke alloy wheels with correct Michelin XWX tires and accompanied by original-specification Cromodora five-spoke alloy wheels, 15279 comes with owner's handbooks and tool kit. This multiple award winner, which comes with the all-important Ferrari Classiche Red Book, stands as one of the finest Daytonas in existence.
