Interested in making your own "Cannonball Run?" or maybe you want to be Corey Haim and out run the demonic school bus from "License to Drive?" MotoeXotica has the car for you in this legally imported Euro spec 1984 Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole. Made in April 1984 at the Maranello, Italy factory, this example is an original left-hand drive European-specification model that was imported to and federalized for use in the United States on December 22nd 1987 by the EPA and DOT (paperwork included). Quattrovalvole is Italian for "four valves," the number of valves on each engine cylinder. The car's previous owner loved and cared for this example for the past 13 years and it really shows today! The last major service and belts were completed in October of 2013 and previous service records go back to 1990 with no large service gaps.
Dressed in sharp red (rosso) paint, the car's finish is in overall very good condition though there are some minor stone chips on the hood, nose and front air dam. The windows are clear and intact, as are the vehicles lights. This prancing horse rolls on Dunlop radials, sized 205/55ZR16 in front and 225/50ZR16 in back. The tires surround silver factory five-star wheels with yellow center caps.
All of the body panels are this car are straight and solid and it's a targa model, so the black roof panel is removable for cruising on sunny days.
Under the rear hood is Ferrari's 2.9L Tipo F105AB V-8 engine with the aforementioned four-valve heads and breathing through quad exhausts. The engine also features Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and Marelli Digiplex electronic ignition. The engine is linked to a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The previous owner had the timing belt serviced in October 2013 and paper receipts are provided from the previous owner. Driver convenience features included tinted glass, a heated backlight and power windows.
Inside, the original tan interior is in overall very good order. The leather bucket seats look great, as does the matching carpet. The instrument panel comes with a full set of gauges plus two more, engine temperature and a clock, in the center console. The speedometer has been calibrated in miles but the odometer is set to kilometers, not miles. A satin black, three-spoke steering wheel with the prancing horse hub faces the driver with the classic, gated shifter down and to the right. The inner door panels, mirror glass, center console and gear shift all look great and rounding out the inside is a Pioneer AM/FM stereo with cassette deck. You probably won't use the stereo much, considering the songs this engine can sing and who could blame you for leaving the stereo alone?
The 308's body was designed by Pininfarina's Leonardo Fioravanti, who had been responsible for some of Ferrari's most celebrated shapes to date such as the Daytona, the Dino and the Berlinetta Boxer. The 308 used elements of these shapes to create something very much in contrast with the angular GT4. GTS models featured a removable roof panel with grained satin black finish, which could be stowed in a vinyl cover behind the seats when not in use.
The main change from the 308 GTBi/GTSi it succeeded was the four valves per cylinder—hence its name, quattrovalvole, literally "four valves" in Italian.
The new model could be recognized by the addition of a slim louvered panel in the front lid to aid radiator exhaust air exit, power operated mirrors carrying a small enamel Ferrari badge, a redesigned radiator grille with rectangular driving lights on each side, and rectangular (in place of round) side repeaters. The interior also received some minor updates, such as a satin black three-spoke steering wheel with triangular center; cloth seat centers became available as an option to the standard full leather. Available options included metallic paint, a deep front spoiler, air conditioning, wider wheels, 16-inch Speedline wheels with Pirelli P7 tires and a satin black roof aerofoil.
Apart from the 32-valve cylinder heads, the engine was essentially of the same design as that used in the 308 GTSi model. The gear and final drive ratios were altered to suit the revised characteristics of the four valves per cylinder engine.
Documentation includes Ferrari folder, stack of service records dating back to 1990, copies of the federalization papers, service facilities book, owners manual, tools and additional spare parts.
