Another popular Italian stallion has pranced into MotoeXotica Classic Cars, this time in the form of a 1988 Ferrari Mondial Cabriolet offered in a rare but very handsome silver exterior with red interior color combo. It is claimed that the Mondial cabriolets are the only production vehicles manufactured to a four-seater, rear mid-engined, full-convertible design. This outstanding Ferrari is understood to have had 3 previous owner and was always garaged and well maintained and the current condition really proves that. The low mileage of 23,171 miles is understood to be actual and is backed up by a recent Carfax and service receipts. The car was recently serviced on 7/15 at Speedsportz in Tulsa Oklahoma which included a tune up and oil change. Carfax shows additional maintenance done by Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale in 2003, 2005, 2006 and by Ferrari of Atlanta in 2006, 2007 and 2010. Previous owner stated that belt service had been performed in the recent past, however no receipts in hand. Carfax further shows some inconsistent mileage entries in 1996 and 2003 from a emissions station and a service. All other entries are in line and consistent and likely represent clerical errors.

Assembled in December 1987 and finished in Argento Nurburgring (Nurburgring Silver) with a folding black top, this car’s paint is in overall excellent order. The glass panels are in near excellent condition, including the rear window. The car’s pop-up headlights work and the rest of the car’s lights, including the lollipop-shaped taillights, are in great shape. This stallion rolls on factory five-star chrome wheels wrapped within Bridgestone Potenza RE-01 radials, 205/55R16 in front and 225/50R16 in rear. All of the body panels are solid and straight, including the folding top, and the body-colored bumpers are in fine shape.

The engine bay is tidy and a full-size spare tire can be found in the front-mounted “trunk.” There is a second cargo area aft of the mid-ships mounted engine. That engine is a 3.2L Tipo F105C four-valve V-8 breathing through dual exhausts and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

Inside, the red leather seats are in very good condition, as is the matching carpeting and two-tone black and red instrument panel. The traditional, three-spoke steering with the prancing horse on the hub, faces the driver. The inner door panels, mirror glass, center console and shifter are all in good shape and completing the interior is a Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo with CD player.

The Ferrari Mondial was a V8, mid-engined, grand tourer coupé and cabriolet produced between 1980 and 1993. It replaced the Ferrari 308/208 GT4 coupé, and remained the last V8-engined 2+2 model Ferrari produced until 2008.

The Mondial name (French for world or global) originated from Ferrari’s motor racing history — the 500 Mondial was a successful lightweight sports racer of the early 1950s which was named to celebrate Ferrari’s consecutive Formula 1 World Championships in 1952 and 1953. Conceived as a ‘practical’ Ferrari, the Mondial is a genuine long-distance four-seater, with sufficient rear head- and leg-room for children and smaller adults. It affords easy access via the long single doors, and has surprisingly good all-round visibility for a mid-engined car. The vehicle has a slightly higher roofline and greater all-round dimensions compared to its two-seater stable mates, resulting in a comparative weight penalty of around 10 percent.

Available in both Coupé and Cabriolet forms, styling refreshed with restyled and body-colored bumpers, similar to the 328 with more integrated indicators and driving lamps, and new alloy wheels with a more rounded face. The 3.2 also boasted a major interior update, with a more ergonomic layout and a more rounded instrument binnacle. Later cars, from 1987 onwards, also sported ABS brakes. Fuel injection remained the primarily mechanical Bosch K-Jetronic (CIS) with an O2 sensor in the exhaust providing feedback to a simple computer for mixture trimming via a pulse modulated frequency valve that regulated control fuel pressure. The ignition system was Marelli Microplex, with electronic advance control and one distributor per bank of the V8. The 1988 Mondial 3.2 would be the final model year that retained the relatively low maintenance costs of the 308/328 drivetrain, allowing major service items like timing belt and clutch replacement performed with the engine/transmission package still in the car.

Competition to this Ferrari in 1988 included Aston Martin’s Vantage Volante, Chevrolet’s Corvette Convertible, Mazda’s RX-7 Convertible and Porsche’s 911 Convertible.

This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 23,177 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
