The Dino308 GT4was introduced at theParis Motor Showin November 1973.
The GT4 was a groundbreaking model for Ferrari in several ways: it was the first production Ferrari to feature the mid-engined V8 layout that would become the bulk of the company's business in the succeeding decades, and was the first production Ferrari withBertone(rather thanPininfarina) designed bodywork. Pininfarina was upset by the decision to give cross-town rival Bertone the design, considering all they had done for Ferrari. The styling featured angular lines entirely different from its curvaceous 2-seater brother, theDino 246, and was controversial at the time. Some journalists compared it to the Bertone-designedLancia StratosandLamborghini Urraco, also penned by Marcello Gandini. From the cockpit the driver sees only the road. It has perfect 360 degree visibility, no blind spots, upright and comfortable seating position, a real trunk, a back seat for soft luggage, and very easy engine access. Enzo Ferrari himself took a major role in its design, even having a mock-up made where he could sit in the car to test different steering, pedals and cockpit seating positioning.
The chassis was a tubular spaceframebased on the Dino 246, but was stretched for a 2,926.90mm (115.2in)wheelbase to make room for the second row of seats. The suspension was fully independent, withdouble wishbones, anti-roll bars, coaxial telescopic shock absorbers and coil springson both axles. Niki Lauda helped set up the chassis.
The 3.0L (2927cc) V8 was mountedtransversallyintegrally joined with the 5-speed transaxle gearbox. The engine had an aluminum alloy block and heads, 16-valves and dual overhead camshafts driven by toothed belts; it produced 255hp (190kW) in the European version and 240hp (179kW) in the American. The induction system used fourWeber 40 DCNFcarburetors. The handsome styling has aged well, and the cars are enjoying a resurgence in interest at the present time, particularly because they are enjoyable cars to drive and are quite usable.
This particular car is believed to have had only two owners from new and has approx. 65,500 mile on it since new. At 65,144 miles the automobile got its 60,000 mile service by an authorized Ferrari Agent in Pennsylvania, where the car has always been garaged by its proud owners. The service included re-torqueing the heads, adjusting the valves, replacing cam seals and distributor drive seals, replaced the cam belts, tensioner bearings, set cam timing, rebuilt water pump, new water pump belt, replaced thermostat, replaced hoses, fuel lines and clamps where needed. Bled radiator system, replaced cap and pressure test system. Distributors were converted to electronic ignition for better reliability and power. Distributor bearings were replaced as well as new ignition wires, extensions and new plugs.
Approx. 300 miles was driven since all the work was done then the car sat for a few years without being driven. So recently another complete service was performed on the car which included draining the gas tanks, another complete tune up and servicing and balancing the carburetors as well as replacing the fairly new timing belts with another set of new timing belts and setting the timing. This service was done in July of 2016.
This Ferrari shows very nice with an incredible interior kept in excellent shape. All the carpets and leather are in excellent shape with no tears which dictates the mileage of the car. The original spare tire and wheel are still with the car as well as the Jack, original tools, all the books, book pouch, sales brochures, and service records.
The body and paint are the weakest part of the car. Many years ago, when these cars were not worth much, the car suffered a left rear end hit which also apparently did some damage to the nose as well. As a result the damaged areas were repaired and repainted. Unfortunately the quality is not to a high standard and it appears some areas of the car still retain its original paint. The repairs however in no way affect the cars road-worthiness and appears very nice without close inspection. It’s a very solid driver that has had everything mechanical sorted. This car is ready to drive anywhere to be enjoyed as it should.- Condition: Used
