Description:
1960 Edsel Comet 2 Door
In 1959, Ford's Edsel Design Division designed the car of the future and built the prototype that would ultimately be the Comet Automobile. Taking into consideration the buying public's dismay over ever increasingly larger, more cumbersome gas guzzlers, the Division's young and bold engineers designed and built what was originally coined by the marketing guys the 'Senior Compact' Comet. Edsel would flex it's visionary muscles and reinvent itself with a car that would satisfy and embrace the inevitable trend toward compacts. The Comet was the best Ford could offer in this new size range and was built to exacting standards in the newest most technically advanced plant in Ford's universe in Lorraine Ohio. The plant was completed in 1958 to build the all new Edsel line but the writing was on the wall that year and a Team was organized to develop the new approach and the Comet was it. Unibody, zinc plated, 2x hand primered body prior to 2x baked enamel paint. Upgaded suspension, 2 speed automatic transmission, and a thrifty 6 cylinder engine. Bigger than a Falco, more luxurious than the competitors. Edsel was killed off in early 1960 due to all the obvious reasons but the Comet was destined to be spawned into one of Ford's greatest sellers. Heavy promotion and deep market research proved it'self again and the new Comet had lines out the door and waiting lists.San Diego, Apri, 1960, this Comet coupe in Tuxedo Velvet'Super Ultra Enamel' paint with the red and white 'Fashion Decor Group' premium vinyl interior, was bought only 4 months after the debut of this highly anticipated car.My neighbor the buyers son, a teen at the time loved and cared for this car ever since and eventually received it in 1969 and meticulously serviced and maintained it until he became unable to drive some years past. It sat covered in his historic home's multi car garage in the company of his early Corvette, Nomad, Lincolns, Beetles and others until his passing 4 years ago. His widow sold me this car impressing upon me the significance of the lineage. I was blown away by it's condition and low mileage of 121000 . I am in possession of every receipt including mileage logs since 1969 and incredible documentation. Since my ownership I have replaced the intire cooling system, brake system, alternator and battery, radial tires, new old stock carburator, starter, fuel pump, and a freshly rebuilt 1961 Ford-o-matic transmission with 2 year warranty by Metro Transmission ( nationwide coverage). This car's engine was replaced around 1980 with a very low mileage Six from a 1978 Ford Fairmont. It runs and drives so smooth and delightful. No squeeks or rattles. A truly beautiful car that gets very good mileage and tons of attention. HEI distrbutor and includes original Ford distributor. Includes exceptionally rare NOS reverse light kit. Wow!
