1980 Dodge W150

1980 Dodge W150 PowerWagonOriginal 4WD Dodge stepside pickup, in its original optional color of Sunburst Orange.I found this almost completely rust free Power Wagon in Texas, where it had been parked for years after the original engine quit running. The original engine was a 318 and the previous owner found that the block was cracked after pulling it for rebuild. The truck sat for several years. I bought the truck complete minus the 318 which was not rebuildable. I shipped the truck to my home in Florida.I installed a rebuilt 360 which a friend of mine built, he only builds 340 and 360 engines. I changed the interior, which was fried by the TX sun, from tan to black. I had the truck repainted in its original color which was an option in 79/80, Sunburst Orange. I sourced original wheels and had them painted to match, and located the correct original hubcaps. I purchased the original oak bed wood, stained and sealed it, and installed it. I power washed the underside of the truck, and painted everything with POR-15 which essentially seals it for good. I installed chrome diff covers for the front and rear axles. I had the front aluminum grille polished and then anodized to protect it. I replaced the front windshield with a good used one. New chrome front bumper, and original, (probably Dealer installed), rear stainless steel step bumper. Replacement Holley steel fuel tank with internal Holley electric fuel pump. I used good quality made in USA parts either new or NOS, and paid extra for them. I used grade 8 hardware when necessary, and stainless hardware pretty much everywhere else.Good running, good looking Power Wagon, in its original color. Turns heads, lots of thumbs up, many questions!Engine:Completely rebuilt 360, bored 30 thousands over, new pistons, rings, bearings, double roller timing chain, new oil pump, original cast iron 360 spread-bore intake manifold, rebuilt original Carter Thermo-Quad four barrel with correct serial number for truck 360, original truck 4WD center dump exhaust manifolds. Cylinder heads resurfaced, fresh valve job, new valve seals. NOS 1970 340 camshaft, NOS Mopar lifters, new spark plugs. new high performance ignition wires. New radiator built to original factory specs, looks original, and original fan shroud fits perfectly. Original Mopar seven blade fan with new fan clutch. New radiator hoses, and new heater hoses. New electronic Mopar distributor, and Orange Ignition box. Engine was broken in correctly using a high zinc racing oil. I have an original single scoop factory air-cleaner for the truck, not pictured.Exhaust:The truck has an original style two into one exhaust system. It still has the catalytic converter, and a single large muffler. So the truck is pretty quiet. I was going to replace with a set of dual exhaust, but I suspect some potential buyers may want the original exhaust with the cat for emissions inspection reasons? Easy enough to add the exhaust of your choice if you don't need emissions inspection in your State.Transmission:I installed a 2200rpm B&M torque converter, fresh fluid, new filter, new shifter selector seals, filter and pan gasket. Transmission was reportedly rebuilt a few years before 318 engine failed. Transmission shifts good and does not leak. I also installed new transmission cooler to radiator lines.Suspension:Is original and still at factory lift height. I installed NOS Rod Hall off road shocks. New power brake booster. New Front brake pads and brake calipers. Cleaned and adjusted the rear drum brakes. Added front and rear chrome differential covers, gaskets, and fresh gear oil. Gears are the factory 3:23. Front axle is Dana 44, and rear is Chrysler Corp 9.25”. Chrysler went to locking hubs in 1979, where before that they were full time four wheel drive. The original Spicer lockable hubs are still installed on the front axle. Everything under the truck was power washed and hand painted with POR-15, which seals it permanently from rust. I painted the frame, the axles, and the leaf springs. Also painted the bolted on Class 3 hitch.Cab:This TX truck body was almost completely rust free, very minor spots here and there to repair. We did patch two or three spots in the cab floors which were thin. These patches were cut from repro' floor pans, and were welded in properly, and the patch welds can be seen from under the cab. Installed a new chrome front bumper with new chrome bolts. I had the original aluminum front grille polished, after minor dents were removed, then anodized to protect it. These grilles are not reproduced and are very hard to find in good condition. The grille is not perfect with some minor corrosion marks still visible on the passenger side front corner. But over all it does look really good. I had the headlamp surrounds re-chromed. Someone added an aftermarket step on each side of the cab many years ago, they are pretty cool so I left them installed, easily removed if not wanted. I reused the original door mounted rear view mirrors, after polishing the stainless, and replacing the mirror glass in both mirrors. I replaced the original outside door handles with re-chromed door handles. New door locks and matching keys were also installed. New reproduction Power Wagon fender emblems, good used 150 fender emblems.Interior:The interior was originally tan in color, I changed it to black. I installed new ignition switch and key which matches the new door locks, and both door locks as a matching set. I replaced the door rubber window trim which looks good, but the windows are harder to roll up and down now, but seem to be getting easier. I added both inner and outer reproduction rocker aluminum floor trim. I installed a rubber floor mat which is vacuum molded to the shape of the floor just like carpet would be. NOS brake pedal rubber pad. I installed a new 4WD shifter boot, and polished the tarnished chrome shifter arm. I painted the lower metal dash frame black to match the other black interior components being changed from the original tan color. I located perfect 80/81 style black door panels which are not easy to find, and installed them. I changed the plastic dash from tan to black, after locating a great original example. I also changed the glove box door from tan to black. I had new seat covers made from a well known east coast upholstery shop, which produces exact copies of factory truck seat covers. I had the bench seat covers duplicated in black vinyl with black velour inserts instead of all vinyl. I disassembled the seat, cleaned the seat frames and painted them with POR-15. I then recovered the seat with the new seat covers. The seat turned out very nice. There is an aftermarket overhead console installed from years ago. It has a AM/FM radio in it, and does make noise, but I have not tried to tune a station. The overhead console could easily be removed if desired. I left it installed because I thought it was pretty cool looking. There is a CB radio installed in the dash where the factory radio would have been, not sure if it works. The door jams and hinge areas were repainted and look good. New rear view mirror was installed. I rebuilt the wiper linkage with new plastic bushings, which is a common issue with these Dodge trucks from 72-93.Paint:Truck was repainted after sanding and blocking to remove many small dings and scratches. I personally sanded the inside four sides of the bed down to the metal, as there were thousands of scratches from many years of use, which would not have been filled in with primer and paint. So it looks pretty nice in there now. Original paint color of Sunburst Orange was applied, and was a color available in 1979 and 1980 only. There is an additional paint tag under the hood next to the regular tag, which seems to suggest that it was a special order color.Bed:Practically no rust on the bed. Truck bed was set back on the frame using the correct wood spacers and steel cross beams. I ordered the original style oak bed wood which comes pre-drilled. I treated the wood with three coats of stain, and followed up with three coats of polyurethane sealer. I coated all sides of the wood, including the ends, to prevent premature rotting. I installed the bed wood with polished stainless hardware. I also installed reproduction polished stainless steps for the bed, whereas the originals were painted orange. I polished the rear Dealer installed stainless bumper, and it looks good. I applied a Mopar approved Dodge tailgate decal where it would have been when truck was new. I removed the aftermarket Clark bed tie-downs polished them and reinstalled them with stainless hardware after bed was painted. I installed new reproduction tailgate stainless steel chains. I installed new reproduction taillights which are identical to the originals. I added a reproduction Holley steel gas tank with electric fuel pump and new fuel sender. All the gauges and speedometer are currently working. Horn does not work. All lights work properly. Sometimes the voltage gauge does not seem to show much charging, but when I check the battery at idles it always shows 13.7 volts, so the system is charging fine.Wheels:I located four original factory steel wheels. I had the wheels sand blasted, primed and painted at the same time the truck was painted. I used the original steel wheels as I wanted to use the original factory hubcaps. I found a nice set of hubcaps with the cutouts for the lockable front Spicer hubs. You never see these factory hubcaps anymore, and they look very cool.Tires:New Mickey Thompson 31 inch tires with white letters, just cause they look good, and the name is still cool!Summary:While this truck is not perfect, it is a very nice example of a Power Wagon from this era. These trucks are finally beginning to see their true value being reflected in the marketplace. This is a vehicle which if you purchased it, and kept for five or ten years, you could sell for more than you spent buying it. So it has some investment potential, it’s not a Hemi Cuda, but it is still going to be worth more in the future, not less. Plus you have a good looking truck to drive! It’s was not a rusty truck, and it’s a cool original color, step-side, and 4WD, it checks all the boxes. I would say the paint is probably 8 out of 10, close to perfect being 9 and perfect a 10. The average person will think it looks very nice, which of course it does. It’s single stage paint like original was, not two stage like modern vehicles. But the paint does have nice depth and reflection as seen in the photos.Issues:The door latch button on the driver door sometimes drops down and locks the door and you have to use the key to unlock it. I have had other old Dodge trucks with this no extra cost feature. I tried to find a better used door latch but no luck so far, it’s not hard to replace. I pulled the latch and cleaned and lubed it but the lock button still drops down locking the door sometimes.I installed a good used front window, but it’s not perfect, it has some scratches on the passenger side. I didn’t notice until after installation, and it may not be worth the cost to replace. I did use a new gasket when it was installed.Horn not currently working. There are probably more minor things on the truck to address, but I can’t think of any right now.The truck still has a TX title, which proves it came from TX!The truck is located in Fort Lauderdale, FL 33317, at my home.I am not a Dealer, but I typically restore one car and one bike per year, when not at work. I do most of the work myself, only farming out machine shop services, and paint shop services. The shops I use, I have used for many years. The shop owners are friends of mine and do great work.I can work with your shipper if you need to ship the truck. I could deliver the truck within the State of Florida for $2 per mile, as I have to go both ways. The truck can stay at my home until your shipper collects it, and will not be driven after being sold.I can be reached at 239-719-0074, leave a message and I’ll call back.Fred
