1970 Dodge Other Pickups

1970 DODGE D200 Camper special, custom cab. I am the second owner, having purchased it in 1989 from the original owner. This has never been a work truck for me, I recognized it was special when I saw it. I could list all the obvious features but will limit it to the special ones. I added the wood grain steering wheel, cruise control and AM-FM radio. The seat material is 1976 Chrysler Cordoba.

The 383 is the original engine. It was rebuilt by a local professional performance engine builder at 127027 miles and now has 59,000 miles on the re-build. This is where it gets special. I wasn’t building a hot motor, but one that could be the best it could be. The block, heads and intake manifold were completely de-burred inside and out. The block is .030” over bore. It was decked and line honed. Compression ratio is about 9:1 to run on regular fuel. The rotating assembly was balanced (see balance sheet). The camshaft was a mild RV type suitable for a truck (see the cam sheet). I used a double roller timing set and an N.O.S. Direct Connection extended rotor oil pump. There is also a windage tray in the oil pan and a new bronze distributor bushing.

The cylinder heads received hard seats and a mild cleanup in the bowl area (not a porting job). New valves and springs too. The heads were port matched to the intake manifold. The intake manifold, carburetor and air cleaner were from a 1970 Polara.

The transmission is the original 727 Torqueflite. I t was rebuilt using original spec. heavy duty truck parts. It got a new torque converter, pump, mild shift kit and a deep sump oil pan with drain plug.

The leaf springs were replaced with new ones from McAllister Spring, in Surrey British Columbia. There is the remains of a sticker on one spring set. It has a class 5 receiver hitch too.

The front end was rebuilt as well as a brake job with new hardware, and the power steering was also rebuilt with new hoses and a rebuilt slave cylinder. I have no record of when these things were done.

The 5 locking ring wheels were replaced with 5 standard wheels and new tires which still have the nipples on them.

I have the original black vinyl bucket seats, steering wheel, AM radio, the original 2-barrel carburetor, manifold and air cleaner and locking ring wheels. These are available for an extra charge.

This truck runs amazingly great, achieving exactly what I wanted. It has been my collector car, but after 33 years it needs a new home.

The bad: The paint is perhaps 50% original and getting thin in places. It has had no damage during my ownership. The fuel gauge has stopped working as has the cruise control. The radio works but needs serviced. The auxiliary fuel tank reeks of old fuel, though I did use it in 2006. One horn doesn’t work, and the steering column needs to be tightened up too.
