He was instrumental in turning Chrysler into a leader of style with the "Forward Look". This 1960 Dodge Dart is significant being the first unibody Dodge design dubbed as a quieter and stronger. As well as one of Exners last designs before he was let go by Chrysler in controversial fashion. The 1960 Dodge Dart displays the epitome of Exners vision guiding the styles of the time, with its afterburner taillights flowing into the tailfins down the low roofline body around the angled front fenders with the beautifully designed quad light grill that looks as if its smiling.This particular 1960 Dodge Dart has a California story dating back to its beginnings the same time the famous JFK/Nixon Presidential election was going on. The Dodge was built in Los Angeles, CA with the top of the line Phoenix trim options. The Dart was sold new at J.E French Co. in Oakland, CA. It has resided in Oakland, CA all of its life and the majority of that time sitting inside of warehouse for decades. This car was built in California, sold new in California and never leaving the city it was sold for 61 years. This is a true California car. A 1960 Dodge is unique car to begin with and to find one that is in the condition turnkey partially restored survivor with all of the hard expensive stuff like paint complete, still residing in the same city it was sold new in is a difficult proposition. The Virgil Exner designed body looks absolutely beautiful with its sharp angles, fins and space age styling. The body is very straight with no dents or damage. There is no rust underneath at all this is a solid California car. The Spruce Green Metallic paint is better than new. The preparation for paint took this Phoenix down to bare metal using the highest quality materials. The Cloud paint in the roof has had added pearl mixed into it. All of the Chrome bumpers and fixtures are in great shape. The license cowl on the front bumper is missing. All of the hubcaps with matching Spruce Green Paint are in great shape. All of the original glass is in good shape except one crack on the windshield.Stepping inside this Dodge really takes you back to 1960. Again, the Virgil Exner treatment and detail started with the dash. The layered angular gauges are a work of art. 1960 was the debut of the four side steering wheel design and it is in great shape. The fixtures are all in good shape. The gauges do not function except for the lights and the oil light stays on. The oil has been changed and the light does not reflect low oil. The lights are functional. All of the original upholstery is in decent shape with no rips except for one on the passenger side. However the foam material has deteriorated and the plushness of the seats have been reduced. The headliner needs to be replaced. The original door panels are in great shape. The original carpet has seen better days. Overall the interior is in decent original shape, everything is complete and the design is something to marvel at.Mechanically this Dart Phoenix runs strong. The 318 wide block poly V8 motor fires up and runs on all 8 cylinders. Punch it and the tires will roast getting this big sedan up to speed with ease. The TorqueFlite automatic transmission shifts smooth in all gears and reverse. The brakes work like they should. The brakes have recently been completely gone through. The tires are in good shape and have been recently replaced. All of the lights and turn signals are functional. This car is ready to cruise.
